Leaving for WDW in 11 days and just laid off

The same thing happened to us last year. We went and had a good time. We did 2 days at Disney, 3 days at grandpas followed by a 4 night Disney Cruise(KSF so if we did not go we would have been out the money). I wish I had not had to worry the whole time. However since then DH has been working a temp job so we have had money coming in but we have had thousands in unexpected repairs and he is bringing in about 1 thousand a month less.

Just keep your head up and enjoy your vacation, keep a positive attitude and good things will eventually happen.

Just remember sometimes you have to be pushed out the door to find something better on the other side. :)

Have a great time!

I'm so sorry. I can't help but think this was unkind of your boss to give such little notice. Did he not plan to retire? It seems like he could have given you a head's up before this. :confused3

I am sure he knew his intentions for a while. He let me go since he needs to cut down the budget and only keep on one other employee while he transitions into retirement. He certainly chose the worst month and he knows about my vacation. I do wish I was given more notice and that it wasn't the holidays. I have been sending out resumes like crazy. I'm hoping for an interview before we leave so I can have some high spirits while I'm in Disney.

I'm expecting the same thing from my boss ANY DAY now. Every day I wonder if I should just take the plunge and find something new. Can you draw unemployment benefits?

This is horrible. How people can do this to someone right before the holidays, I don't know. I truly hope that things work out for you. :)

Enjoy your vacation. The same thing happened to me a few years ago. I was jobless for a few months but finally found a position with growth. I'm now at 130% of where I was previously.

When one door closes, another door opens.

  • Apply for unemployment benefits as soon as possible.
  • Update your resume and begin preparing cover letters.
  • Search craigslist, snagajob, etc.
  • Are you a member of any professional organizations? Network friends/associates.

Good luck and stay strong. :grouphug:

So sorry, OP. Try to start your search now and then you won't feel sad while you're in the World.

A lot of companies pare down or close right before the holiday season because they don't have the money to pay employees without incurring debt. In retail, that's why a lot of stores close in October - they can't get the credit needed to buy merchandise for the holiday season.

In a single-proprieter situation like this, he wants to make the year finish with a profit to impress prospective buyers. He may have just come from a meeting with the accountant/lawyer where they pressured him into letting you go.

Still, it sucks. Especially the timing for you.

Great advice!

Thanks for the tips but all of that is already done. Resume is updated and out to many employers, filed for unemployment (which stinks by the way). I don't know how some people choose to live off of the measly amount you get. I've contacted several people I know to let them know I'm looking. I asked my boss to write me a recommendation letter and have it to me ASAP. He said he would but don't have it yet.

I told my DH last night that I'm afraid I won't be able to enjoy Disney since I'll feel like I should be job searching and not having fun. Ugh this whole situation stinks. I might be having a few cocktails at the resort when we arrive to help unwind and relax.

This is a "fake it 'til you make it" situation.

You've got to pretend you're having the trip of your life, until you really do feel that way. And, I assure you, you will.

I'm so sorry you lost your job, and the horrible timing of it. Throw yourself an enormous pity party (you've earned it) and get it all out. Then, embrace this trip, countdown chain, youtube videos and all until you're excited.

Your exactly right! I deserve to be pissed and upset for a moment, but I also owe it to myself and my family who paid for this trip to truly enjoy it.

The other/main reason is to avoid tax complications, mainly benefits. A lot of times you see companies that will not allow you to carry unused vacation over to the next year. It's tax codes dictating that. In my case my last day was supposed to be Dec 24. For some reason, (and it only happened to me. I think my boss had a hand in it.) my last day was changed to Jan 2. As a result I got an extra six weeks vacation pay out of it.

Today is a new day! :wizard: While my suitcase has been sitting on my guest bed for over a week, I had zero motivation to even begin packing once my boss decided to be a Scrooge. Today however we got our first real snow of the season and it just lifted my spirits a little. I convinced my DH to help me put the last of the Christmas decorations up :santa:, started laundry for clothes I need for Disney, ran to the store and scored a few clearance clothes for Disney and came home to start packing for Disney. I am beginning to think my spirits will be fully restored by the time we start walking to the Magical Express at MCO. My boss asked me to come in to work a few days this week and I agreed since the money is needed and I don't want to burn a bridge. I just hope his Scrooge attitude doesn't get me back into a rut. I can't thank each and every one of you enough for the advice you have given me and I know it helped contribute to my renewed excitement for our trip. :thanks: :grouphug:

We leave a week from tomorrow (Monday the 16th). As I was starting to pack today, my DH said "This time next week we can begin our Disney countdown". I think he meant his Disney countdown since mine started the moment we booked our vacation. He will join in on the excitement soon! Until then I have the Dis. :disrocks:
