I caught a pretty nasty cold, and symptoms started appearing this past Saturday, stuffy nose, sore throat, tired, etc. Today, Tuesday, is the fourth day. I got a Z-Pak on Sunday, but I still feel pretty bad.

Any tips on how to get over my cold faster? At least I got it now instead of in the middle of trip. I'm hoping most of the symptoms will be gone by Thursday.

Thanks!

I would def explain to your dr that you want a stronger antibiotic. We went last November with bad colds, and I got pneumonia. It was awful.

Besides that, plenty of fluids, veggies, and rest.

Best of luck! That really stinks!

If it's truly a cold antibiotics won't do anything. Just drink lots of fluids and rest up it should pass on its own. Bring cough drops, Kleenex, and any cold medicine you might want, won't want to buy it there. Hope you feel better.

be very careful if you decide to take over the counter cold medicines. They will dehydrate you. That coupled with the florida heat can cause serious problems. I know from experience. It will ruin a vacation.

Z-pac (or any other antibiotic for that matter) won't do squat for a cold. They will only help for secondary infections brought on by the cold (ear infection, sinus infection, etc.).

Rest and fluids. It's a virus and just has to run its course.

If you are flying, be careful, flying with congestion can hurt!! Ear Planes, ear plugs have helped me out a lot, when I have had to fly with a head cold.

Agree that if it is a cold, z-pack won't help. Assume you have seen a dr if you have that. If she/he diagnosed you with any bacterial infection, the z-pack should be working by now and so I'd return to ask for something else like augmentin. If just a viral infection, stop the z-pack as it won't help and just kills off all those good bacteria in your gut. If it is a viral infection, as others have said, the only thing you can do is let it run its course. Lots of rest and fluids, especially hot ones like tea and soup, especially any chicken broth ones.

As for the other things, I'd get some OTC meds like Mucinex or Robitussin, depending on your symptoms. Also I agree and highly second the Ear Planes. Follow the directions and work like a charm. I used them when I flew with a terrible cold and no ear pain at all. Also be sure to pack your own fav brand of tea. Nothing like still feeling under the weather and having no hot beverage options you like. Be sure to bring a couple bags on the plane too as you can always ask for hot water and use your own tea bag. Try hot showers too to steam up and that can help loosen the congestion. Finally, hand sanitizer! You're sick so your immune system is already dealing with something. Last thing you need is another bug on top of what you have.

Almost forgot -- be sure to take a decongestant right before your flight to help avoid uncomfortable degrees of pressure.

Thanks! Hopefully I will feel better. I keep feeling better and then worse. The Z-pak doesn't seem to be helping, so it must be a virus. I will definitely pick up the ear planes this afternoon. I have been working very long hours, 12 - 14 a day the last couple of days, so that hasn't helped. I will rest today and maybe call in sick tomorrow!

Try using nasal spray in combination with an otc cold medicine with psudeophedrine. That is what my doctor now "prescribes" for anything viral to help the body fight through but not overload the system with antibiotics. I usually feel better by day 2 or 3 with that combo.

My Dr always suggests B12 shots. Im not a fan of shots and decline, but he swears by them.

Not to be preachy but if your still under the weather and theres anyway you can shift your vacation I think your body will thank you along with everyone else on the plane and in the parks. If you are hacking on the plane someone else is bound to come down with your ailment in the middle of their Disney Vacation. Additionally, if you hold off until your better you may actually enjoy some of the vacation whereas if you keep pushing yourself your likely to have this thing linger and or get worse. Just some thoughts..

SLEEP. I swear that is the one thing that saves me from a cold... sleep and nap as much as possible leading up to your vacation. Even if it means spending an entire day in bed/on the couch. It will help your body rest enough to recover. And of course drink as much water/gatorade as you can stand.

I've done WDW with a cold twice and have done some serious hiking that was pre-planned months in advance with really awful colds. (My ability to catch any infectious disease that's within a hundred mile radius is, I am told, a gift from my New World ancestors.)

Stock up on whatever OTC cold medicines make you feel best. I like a combination of dayquil, niyquil, alka seltzer plus cold, sucrets or chloraseptic drops, aleve, and puffs with aloe (not all at the same time, of course). Rest and hydrate as you can. If you have a car, there's several chain drug stores close to Disney, so you can swing in and change course on OTC stuff if you want. The main thing is to alleviate the symptoms until the virus has run its course.

I decided to go to the doctor again today just to see what else he recommends. I am not hacking or coughing, but I am blowing my nose, though not near as frequently as I was a day or two ago. I have hand sanitizer, which I am using after every nose blow and I am as careful as I can be around others. I cannot reschedule my trip or I would. Since I started with symptoms on Saturday, I am hoping the worst of it is over. I just want to be as careful as I can for myself and others.

Take some zinc, B12 & eat lots of oranges. It will help! Make sure you drink lots of fluids and have plenty of chicken noodle soup.
