Leave on Wed, might be pregnant? Should I avoid big rides?

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby but haven't been sucessful. I have been consoling myself by saying at least I will be able to ride all the big rides at Disneyland if I don't get pregnant.

Well long story short, I'm about 6 days late. (sorry if TMI!) I have taken two pregnancy tests and they both were negative. So I don't know what to think!

I know it is possible to get a false negative so should I assume that I am and avoid the big rides? I also know that there could be a million other reasons why I am late so should I just go and enjoy myself?

At most, I guess if I am pregnant I would be around 2 - 3 weeks??

I don't want to miss out on the fun if I'm not, but I also don't want to hurt anything if I am. I would rather have a baby then go to Disneyland.

Thanks,
Jes

Jess,

Call your OB or primary Dr. and ask for a BETA HCG test, this would be able to tell you for certain whether or not your pregnant, even at the earliest stages (in the case of late implantation.)

Explain the situation and ask them to order the test STAT so you can have the results in a few hours.

Good luck!

My DH and I went through fertility treatments to get pregnant. I went to DL just after a treatment, not knowing I was pregnant (it ended up I was!!!) and rode all of the rides with no problems. In fact, we include this in the number of times our DD has been to DL.

At this early stage, there shouldn't be a problem at all, but you need to do what is comfortable for you. You can still have a great time at DL without riding the BIG rides.

Good luck!! pixiedust:

You are most likely not pregnant, but call your Gyn and ask what he/she thinks about you riding the rides "if" you happen to be pregnant.

I know what you're going through. DH and I were married for 5 years (without using birthcontrol - sorry, more TMI) before we figured out something was wrong. Seven months of fertility drugs later, I was finally pregnant.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you have a very magical time at Disneyland!:wizard:

I would call the dr. and have them give you a blood test so you can be sure!

I agree, call your doctor and have them perform a test on you. And I too, have been there and done that. Its very hard on a couple so if this isn't "it" hang in there. And if the test is negative again, than maybe a trip to DL will cinch the deal for you! Best of luck to you and have a wonderful trip.

Good, good luck, I really hope you are pregnant! We went through secondary IF and it is sure a tough road. Because of this, I would say to you to 1.) Get the blood test done, as the others here have said, to find out for sure, and 2.) I would NOT ride the (more wild) rides if I were pregnant, or even if I thought I might be, for the simple reason that if something bad were to happen, you might blame yourself for having gone on the rides. That being said, I do think at that stage that rides would be safe to go on and would not harm the newly implanted babe, but knowing how much you long for this, it's not worth taking a any risk, IMO. I don't think we can say at this point you are not likely pregnant. In your situation, it depends on how regular your cycles usually are, as well as if you have a tendency to be late in your cycles, etc. Also, some pregnancy tests will test for fairly high levels of HcG which will not show up very early on. There is a list of the brands of pregnancy tests (google search on the net) and how much HcG they measure, and I would try one of those earlier detection ones if I didn't book in for bloodwork. I hope, hope, hope you are pregnant. Hang in there!!!!! :goodvibes

I can relate - we tried to get pregnant for a long time, then we started on fertility drugs (only one cycle, thank goodness!!). I took several home pregnancy tests that all said I was not pregnant, went to the doc and did a regular pregnancy test - negative. She said I was probably not pregnant. Went to see my specialist, who did a blood test.... Guess what??? Nine months later I had my beautiful boy :thumbsup2 Those home pregnancy tests are not all that sensitive and six days is fairly early. I would definitely get a blood test done. At least then you know and you can decide for yourself if you should avoid any of the big rides.

Good Luck!!

well id say if you are you are only a few weeks you dont usely have to worry till 2 in half to 3months and on I think you could ride some big rides if you wanted to and not have any problem. Id call dr and see what he or she says tell them you jsut dot know

that said my firend didnt know she was pg and we went to disney went on all the big rides we liked and she had no idea..

:) i went through this plenty of times, so i know exactly what you're going through! i ALWAYS thought i was pregnant, month after month, and it always turned out that i wasnt. the one month i actually WAS pregnant, i was just like 'whatever, im not pregnant, im going to enjoy myself!'. we went to great america (its a theme park over here in santa clara with lots of big rides and stuff) and i rode allll the coasters and things i shouldnt have. of course i freaked out when i my test came out positive, but thank god my son came out healthy (huge at 9lbs 21inches cuz im only 5 feet tall, but healthy :rotfl2: )

if i were you, i would definitely try and see the dr before you go, b/c they will be able to tell you right away, but if you cant, i think it will be fine to go ahead and do most of the rides (maybe not TOT though..). you know your body best though...do you 'feel' pregnant?

and if you are pregnant, then congrats! i know it sucks to not be able to ride the bigger rides, but hey you'll be having a baby! ive been to DL prego, and trust me, you'll still have an amazing trip

good luck!

I agree that you'll still have an amazing trip without all the big rides. When dh and I were moving from Oregon to Alabama, it was winter time, I had just found out I was pregnant - and we drove down thru Cali and across the southern states to get there (with a big moving truck) - we stopped for a couple of days at DL and DCA (it had just opened that year), and we had a blast. There's still so much you can do.

But I would definitely check with the dr to make sure and talk to them - it might be that this early if you are, there's no risk going on those rides. Your OB will know best. Whatever they say - listen to them above anything else we say.

Thanks for all the replies, advice and for sharing your own stories.

I made an appointment with my gyn for tomorrow at 10 am. I can call them on Wednesday for the results.

I am sooo nervous...I really want to be pregnant and this may sound silly...but even though the home test was negative, I know they can be wrong so I am still hopeful. But the blood test result...if it is negative...well, that is kind of final.

(btw, the home test I took was EPT - it claims you can test 5 days before your expected period)

I am not even worried about missing the big rides...Disney has so many other things to offer and I have been to WDW several times and DL once in 2005 and I know that we will go again someday.

Anyway, thanks again!
Jes

Until October of '05 I agreed with Jade's thoughts, of not worrying about it that early. But I went with those thoughts, around the same timing that you are right now, and went on Indy despite a feeling I shouldn't. Next day my cycle started, very different than usual, and it was VERY upsetting. I'm very sad that I made that decision for myself (I consulted hubby and he was and actually still IS of the same feeling of "that early a ride isn't going to mess anything up") PERSONALLY, so I share my feelings so that you can "try them on" and see how you might feel.

Now, for the future! Are you charting? If you are not charting, get a copy of the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and start doing it! It would help you greatly at 6 days past a missed period, in knowing what was happening in your body then, and what's going on now, even while the tests are saying different things.

(Just don't ask me if I am charting b/c then I'd have to be embarrassed at the "um no" answer)

Also, with "pregnancy time", it's counted from date of last missed period. So by the time you conceive, if it's successful, you're actually around 2 weeks pg, LOL. When your period should have arrived, if you're pg, you're about a month pregnant. It's hilarious. In the future I refuse to follow that nonsense, especially since we're long-cookers in my family and I refuse to evict a baby before THEY are ready, so using time from conception with friends and family gives me "don't bug me" wiggle room of around 2 weeks. (I was bothered mercilessly by friends and family and it drove me INSANE...kept trying to remind them that hubby himself was a 44 week baby, but they Would Not Shush)

Good luck with your Dr. appointment tomorrow. Hopefully you will be pregnant! :goodvibes It sounds like there are many on this board who also had problems conceiving. My boys are not spaced that far apart on purpose!! :lmao: And who knew after 12 years of secondary infertility that I could have two surprise babies 2 years apart??? Without any sort of fertility treatments whatsover, also no charting or anything!

Good luck and keep us posted! I know how it feels to hope, hope, hope! Sending best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!

I used an ovulation kit and got pregnant the first time I used it with both kids. We were trying the first time with no luck for 7 months. I made an appt. with my OB and she suggested the kit along with 2 tsp of Robitusin cough medicine (TMI- but it thins mucus :confused3 ). Sure enough I was pregnant. With #2 we decided to try when our daughter was 15 months old b/c it had taken so long. I used the kit and cough meds and was pregnant on the first try!

Anyways, keep us posted! Oh, I had 6 negative tests over 3 weeks with our first daughter before I took a blood test that was positive! You never know!

We have also been using an ovulation kit. This was month 3 of using the test. The funny thing is though that this was also the month where I never got a positive reading. I am not sure if I started testing too late or if I didn't test long enough but I figured out of all the months, this was the one where I had the least chance of getting pregnant. :rotfl2:

At any rate, I go today for the blood test and waiting until tomorrow is going to be so hard! I am hoping they will have the results before the plane leaves or I might have to wait until Thursday since our plane doesn't land until almost 6 pm east coast time.

Thanks again for everyone's replies - they have definitely made me feel a bit better about everything and I wouldn't have even thought to schedule a blood test this early!

Jes

I agree with most of the people but also wanted to offer my experience.

You can *probably* ride the rides and be okay but no one knows for sure the effect of g-forces on a developing fetus (embryo- however far along you are). Also, there are very definite changes in YOUR body even very early. That is where you may get into trouble.

I am currently 11 weeks pregnant and went to Six Flags (Texas) with my physics students and my husband. We rode most everything and I was having a LOT of problems with become dizzy and really unbalanced. As I did not yet know I was pregnant, (Surprise!!!) I was really having a hard time trying to keep up with the kids. We free fall ride similar to TOT and I nearly blacked out. After that I sat things out and thought I was getting a migraine or something. I found a spot in the shade and people watched the last 2 hours.

That night I had a little spotting. . . I had not missed my period so I did not think anything of it and if anything thought it would explain things if I had started. Four days later my temperature went up (I was charting using Fertility Friend online) and I tested. It was (perhaps very faintly)positive. (I tested again and again with mixed results:confused3 ). By that time smells were getting stronger and I had only spotted the one night-for sure pregnant. When I went to Six Flags I was about 14 DPO and already the blood pressure changes were starting. I asked the doc if the spotting could have been implantation and he said no. It was likely form weakening on the blood vessels as they relax and likely brought on by the rides, though bleeding in early pregnancy is not uncommon. Fortunately it stopped without incident but now I will not take the risk.

We are headed to the park in 3 weeks and I will NOT be riding anything that I won't take my 3 yo daughter on. The warnings are there for a reason I guess.

I hope this helps! And I also vote that you get the beta HCG blood work. Other than that, I will say that I tried every test out there with this one (disbelief and very faint positives) and the "Answer" brand test in the orange box were the cheapest and MOST sensitive (darker, real line with the SAME sample). They were positive before all the other *early* tests.

Wishing you babydust!!! :wizard:

So I can call tomorrow around 10-11 am to find out the results. So I should know before I even board the plane if I am pregnant. So IF I am pregnant, what rides should I avoid? I haven't been to Disneyland since 2005 and even then it was for one day so we didn't experience everything...I don't even know what some of the rides are, lol!

So I am thinking...

Space Mountain is out? What about Splash or Matterhorn? Indy?

Disney Screamin, Tower of Terror, Maliboomer definitely. Mulholland Madness?

I definitely don't want to hurt the baby if I am pregnant, but don't want to go overboard. If that makes sense?

Thanks!
Jes

I typed the above reply and then remembered that I have park maps (thanks Bumbershoot!). According to the park maps, these are the rides that expectant mothers should not ride:

Disneyland

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Splash Mountain (surprised by this, I only remember a few slight hills on this? Well at least on the World version)
Indiana Jones Adventure
Matterhorn Bobsleds (again surprised, thought it was mostly fast but no hills? Of course my memory sucks and I only rode it once in 2005)
Autopia
Space Mountain
Star Tours

California Adventure

Tower of Terror
Tuck N Roll's Drive Em Buggies
Maliboomer
Mulholland Madness
California Screamin'
Grizzley River Run

I don't feel sad to miss anything but feel bad for my daughter who won't have anyone to ride with! (Just an excuse to take her back, right???!!!) I actually took her to Disney World in March on a mom & daughter only trip for this purpose...to kind of make up for if I was pregnant in Disneyland and also a chance to spend time with just her before she has to share me. (she understands that we want a child but having been the only child for 15 years, it is going to be wierd and hard for her)

Please keep your fingers crossed!!! :goodvibes

Thanks,
Jes

If it was me in a very early stage of pregnancy, I'd avoid the rides that put a lot of G-forces on my body.

I'd avoid Screamin' for sure, and possibly the Tower of Terror (and I wouldn't ride Maliboomer anyway because I'm too chicken).

The rest (Space, Mulholland, Splash, Big Thunder, Indy, Matterhorn) I would go ahead and ride without worry. But that's just me.

Did you ask your doctor about it? If not, and the blood test comes back positive, then I would put in a call to your doctor and/or nurse and ask their opinion on riding rides in early pregnancy.

But no matter what, I hope you have a wonderful, magical time at Disneyland!:wizard:
