On another site, Carol MN said "January is really busy because so many are using their 11 month windows to book December 2008 vacations" which led me to thinking - what is the least busy month for scheduling a 11th month reservation. Having this knowledge could affect when I would want my use year to start. We would not be visiting DW during "peak" times, meaning, no Christmas, Spring Breaks, or Summer Break visits for our family. Does the month your use year begin affect the available units at 11 months? I would think so...

Your use year has NOTHING to do with WHEN you can book at the 11 month booking window. Only your check out date determins that.

Use year has no effect on room availabilty, as use year does not affect your 11 month window at all. No matter what use year you own, you can book a vacation at your home resort beginning 11 months from date of check-out.

Use year comes into play for banking deadlines and borrowing points.

Of more importance is how popular certain booking dates are for your travel dates. For example: DVC owners tend to prefer times like Thanksgiving through the first 2 weeks of December as well as most holiday times and the weeks of the Food and Wine festival. January is becoming popular through the marathon also.

What I meant was that Member Services is really busy in January (thus all the posts about having a hard time getting a phone call through to them). MS is busy because so many members like to visit WDW in December and January is the 11 month window.

As the others have said, no matter what use year you buy, you can always make reservations at your home resort 11 months prior to check out.

Use year can be important because it determines banking deadlines. If you have to cancel a vacation and can't reschedule it prior to the end of your use year, then banking deadlines become very important. If you regularly travel at the same time every year, choose a use year up to 4 or 5 months prior to that time.

Keep in mind that travel patterns can easily change over the course of your membership. What starts out as a perfect use year could end up to be not so perfect. So don't stress out too much over use year. If you are fortunate enough to never have to cancel a vacation that occurs late in your use year, it won't matter at all.
