OK, some of you may remember that I went from a Canon G2 to a Nikon D200 and the jump was staggering for me. I debated quite a bit about getting another camera to help me move into the D200 more slowly but I never did. I got the book Understanding Exposure (excellent!) and the D200 Field Guide - along with the user manual - and I've been shooting away.

I am learning to love the D200.

Here are some shots I took yesterday. Most of them were taken in MANUAL mode if you can belive that!

On that last one... would it have helped to underexpose that shot with the backlighting?

Hi,
Nice shots! I do not think anything is greatly overexposed. Fill flash would have helped even the scene exposure. One thing I see is the water drops obscure the eyes in this shot. Try burst mode and shoot a quick three. That helps capture just the perfect expression or the moment when the water is in the best place. with most photos of people you realy want to see the eyes.

Thanks for the idea! I think we're going to have some sprinkler fun this evening, so I'll try it then. I was having fun with manual mode and I have a few shots with a faster shutter speed that freezes the water more. Maybe I'll put the polarizer on next time too.

Full manual is tough when you are trying to keep up with kids.

I use Av mode. I choose the aperture for Depth Of Field and watch what the camera is doing for autoexposure. Check the histogram, I think you have one, during the instant review on the lcd. If the bars are off the top of the graph then it is too bright. Likewise if the bars are very short then it may be underexposed. My canon rebel has a feature where all overexposed areas of the pic will flash in the review.

In morning and evening the light has more color. Midday is super bright and not at a good angle. You get a lot of shadows.

Post some of the evening shots. But as the light dims remember to watch the shutter speed so you do not get camera shake.

I am still learning a lot about my cameras light meter so I was having fun using manual mode. AV mode is giong to be more useful as I get deeper into using this camera. I still haven't figured out how fast my shtter speed needs to be get the effect I want without needing a tripod. It's tricky for a beginner!
