DS16 has his learner's permit, and his driving is going great. BUT he needs 60 hours of driving to get his license, and we're thinking we might need a few road trips to get him some good chunks of driving time. Does anyone know if there are rules about kids with learner's permits driving in other states?

We live in Maryland and we're going to NJ for the weekend, for instance. (We'll be cutting across the tip of Delaware on the way.) I couldn't find anything on either MD's or NJ's MVA web sites about this.

I don't know about your side of the country but I know my 16 yr old nephew drove from Utah into Nevada and back, got pulled over for speeding and given a verbal warning only by the cops and a REALLY verbal warning by my brother! LOL

I think most states are ok as long as a licensed driver *especially a parent* is also in the car. I'd just tell him not to speed or weave! LOL

Haven't been there....haven't done that. One more year. I buy bubble wrap everytime I go to Staples!!!!!

From what I have read, your DS can use his permit in NJ and must abide by all MD permit regulations. Don't take my word for it, check with the NJ DMV but I am pretty sure that info is correct.

I don't know about by you but we can't drive out of our county nevermind the state with a learners permit.

I was always under the impression that a learners permit was only valid in the state in which it was issued. :confused3

My 18 yr old DS just got his license last Oct. I know that in NY (where we are) he wasn't allowed to drive out of state with his permit.

You can go online to the driver's license website of the states you'll be driving through. My DS was 16 last summer and we planned a trip to Cedar Point (we live in PA) while he had his learner's permit and he wanted to drive. I called the PA driver's license folks and they said it's all determined individually by each state. So I went on the Ohio driver's license website and looked up their regulations. Their rules are the same as PA - as long as a licensed driver is in the car with him, he can drive. But as you saw some of the posters from NY - they can't even drive outside their county.

I get my permit today (wahoo!) and I was wondering the same thing for here (Wisconsin), and I checked the DMV website and didn't see any restrictions of where I can go, just who drives with me and when. :)

No, it is not true that a permit is valid only in the state it is issued. My dd was issued a permit in Texas.
It depends on state rules.

My dd is 16 and this is a question we had as well, because we were vacationing in Missouri. Basically you have to follow the rules of YOUR PERMIT or the state. Just look it up.

My daughter will be visiting us in Texas this summer and she has a Driver's Permit from California that allows her to drive if an adult is in the front seat with her. Can she drive on that Permit in Texas?
Texas honors the licenses and instruction permits from all other states as long as an individual remains in a visitor status and abides by the restrictions on the valid license or instruction permit. However, if an individual chooses to become a resident of this state, he/she will be required to surrender the out-of-state driver license or permit within 30 days of establishing residency.

Both of my sons drove on road trips with their Colorado Learners permits-and we never had an issue.

I would think that most states would honor a permit issued by another state as long as there is a licensed driver in the car with that person. Each state has different licensing requirements and I don't see where the permit issue would be any different. In MN you can get a drivers license at age 16 but in NJ you have to be 17. A MN driver that is 16 would not be driving illegally in NJ so I would think that a child with a permit would not be driving illegally in any state either.

I would have assumed that just like a marriage--a drivers license is recognized by all 50 states.

And like states that require auto inspections. If you are from out of state or out of county, they cannot ticket you b/c you don't have an inspection sticker when it isn't required in your state/county of residence and registration.

(but the license bit is my assumption. When I learned to drive, my state LICENSED age was 15. This was not learner's permit. My parents said "no way" so I don't recall at the time what the rules were, but I had 15yo friends who drove themselves to school....LEGALLY.)

The official answer from my insurance agent: It's OK with them.

The official answer from the MD MVA: It's OK with them as long as it's OK with the other state.

The official answer from the NJ MVC: No.

Guess we'll switch drivers once we hit the Delaware border.

Your mileage may vary.

Retired police officer here and I've never heard that you can not drive outside of your county with a NY learners permit. The DMV site states that drivers with permits from other states can drive in NY with their permit as long as they comply with their restrictions. As far as driving into another state from NY, it depends on the state you are driving into.

In South Dakota kids can get a license at age 14--not even a farm permit, a license (in MN they can get a farm permit at 15).
