These are just a few of the things I've had to become familiar with since moving to Michigan from California 14 months ago.....whether I wanted to or not.

Tractor crossing
Road Kill
Deer Season
Ice scrapers
Blowing snow advisories and White-out conditions (not the stuff you use on paper when you mess up)
Snow days
Lake effect snow (still don't really get this one) :confused3

And most importantly.....it's called pop, NOT soda!

Burr... I sympathize but didn't you forget:
SNOW boots
SNOW pants
SNOW blowers
SNOW shovel
and
SNOW!!! :goodvibes

Moved to Kansas City from Montana... traded 6 months of winter for 6 weeks!! Still miss the summers up north... BUT NOT THE WINTERS!

You didn't know there were 5 seasons to the year?

Spring
Summer
Fall
Winter
& Hunting :earboy2:

My Aunt moved to the West side of Michigan. Everyone would say "it's just lake effect". She said, it's still snow, I don't get the it's just lake effect! LOL!

My best Michigan story. One Thanksgiving we went to a relatives cabin. Hanging from the the front porch was a deer! I (the girl not from MI) was so grossed out. The rest of the crowd, they said great, is it a buck or a doe and how many points is that! The host served deer tenderloin for dinner along with the turkey.

My DH will drive in any condition, will not stop. As he tells me, he went to school in the UP, this is nothing. Drives me crazy, why can't we stop in a white out!

Darn, you're right. But that is a season that is year-round.

Lake effect snow is real fun and you will soon be learning what it is and it's affects on you. Pop is the correct and only name for the stuff it isn't all coke or soda it is pop. Enjoy your new winter wonderland.

Welcome to Michigan!! Don't forget soon you will hear that dreaded weather term..."Wind Chill"!! :earseek:

"lake effect snow" is just fancy terminology for a weather front passing over a body of water (a lake) and picking up moisture from said lake, and then returning it to you in the form of snow. :sunny: Unfortunately, lake effect snow can be quite heavy, or make a normal snowstorm much worse than it would've been otherwise. We got lots of that in upstate NY.

ETA: We call it soda, but notice that most everyone from the midwest calls it pop. I don't think either are really incorrect, since they are just shorter ways to say soda pop, which is the term once used, I believe.

Another Michigan benefit....when people ask where you live, you can show them on your hand! ;)

Yep! I came from Detroit, you know, at the base of your thumb! Had family in Port Huron, near the flap of skin between your thumb and index finger! The people who get lake effect snow, they are all along the pinky side of your hand!

I will never forget the very normal conversation my mom and I were having about where I had gone to a friend's house up north in Mio, and she asked just how far up north it was, and I pointed to the middle of my hand and somebody (who apparently was not from Michigan) behind us started to giggle!

Oh, and it is Ruf, not Roof. Just ask life long Michiganders to say it, you'll see!

Rella- I moved to KC from Michigan, and aren't the winters the best?!!!! I love it. I miss everything else about MI, but not the winters. I wish my kids could build snow forts though. Snow does not stick around or get deep enough for more than snowball fights!

Funny, I went to school in Michigan for a year, and everyone would hold up their hand and ask where I was from. They didn't think it was funny if I held up my fist and tried to show them where Cleveland was. (Go on, make a fist - it resembles Ohio, no?) :)

You laugh, but one year in a "getting to know you" activity at the beginning of the school year, I had one of my 3rd graders answer "My favorite season is..." with "deer season."
:rotfl:

Well my favorite is

The best place to be in Michigan in the winter is.......................

FLA (WDW to be exhact.) I told DH I would stay here if I could go to FLA at least once every winter (more if we can swing it.)

So far we have and it sure makes me more happy.

This thread is cracking me up! I'm a Michigan lifer...just look at my location in my profile! :cool1:

From an Ohioan....Welcome to the wonderful midwest!

Also living in Michigan you will get to be involved in one of the biggest rivalries in college football.....Ohio State and Michigan!

btw....GO BUCKS! :teeth:

You happen to live in the town where I was born, and spent my first 12 years and it is the best place to live ever! Well, unless you want good schools for your kids. How can you not love a town that has the world's biggest garage sale every year? They still do that, don't they?

I miss Michigan. Now where is that crying like a baby smiley?
