leapster, v smile pocket or neither

I was thinking of getting one of these for Christmas. I would like my 9 y/o and 3 y/o to be able to use it. Looking at both websites, it seems like my oldest is right at the end of the age range for both products. Does anyone have these and do your 9 or 10 (or older) kids use them? If not, are there other handheld educational games for that age group? Do they make educational games for like game boy? TIA

I can tell you that my DS(10) is always using my DD's (6) leapster. We don't have a v-smile. I am almost sure there are no "educational" games for GAmeBoy in her age range. I know there are a few number/letter games with Elmo, etc. for the younger kids for GB.

There are different age games available for Leapster including some storybooks. My DS enjoys them. It's worth looking into further.

Hi. My son 5 had the leapster but we sold it a few weeks ago and bought the v-smile handheld. It is great. He plays the Vsmile a lot more than the leapster and I think it is more educational. My friend bought our leapster for her 3 children 10,6,3 and she said the 10 year is definately too old for it. My son likes the games better for v-smile. Good luck!

DD13 enjoys playing with DD5's Leapster--we have the Learn to Draw and the Disney Princess cartridges. I just noticed that on the Leap Frog site they have an I Spy Challenge for kids in 1st-4th grade....actually it looks like a lot of the cartridges might be fun for your older child.

thanks for the link. I'm sure she would enjoy the games, even if it's just practicing stuff she knows already. Is there a difference between leapster and leapster l-max? Do the games play on each other?

I didn't even notice that there was an L-Max....here is what it says on their site:

my dd, who is 5, loves hers. It was especially great at the airport. I don't know if she is actually learning new material but it is great for reinforcing key concepts.

We bought the Leapster for my 7 and 9yr olds before they came out with the version that can hook up to the TV. We also have the v-smile. We prefer the Leapster. The v-smile does not seem to have games for older kids and we have had a lot of problems with the system itself. Even my husband and I enjoy playing both, they are not hard just something fun to do with the kids. They love it when they can beat you.

My DD5 absolutely loves her Leapster It's the best Christmas present that she got and her DD7 is always borrowing it from her which makes for some wonderful sister arguments which always end with a door slamming

I would recommend it.

Oh boy, maybe I'll ask both sets of grandparents for it, then we'll have 2 and I can pretend I forgot I asked the others. LOL

We have leapster and vsmile...the leapster definately holds his interest longer and the games seem to be more thought out and educational...just my opinion though! Good luck deciding, they are both fun!
