DD (5.5) has a very reasonable Christmas list this year, only 3 things on it. After getting the first 2 things, which I know I want to get for her, there is only about $50 left to spend on her. The third thing she really wants is a Leappad. Walmart has them on sale tomorrow morning for $40 but here is my problem-I have heard that she is not going to be in love with a Leappad for very long. So I'm wondering if I get the Leappad anyhow, maybe put it for both girls and DD (3) can grow into it after DD outgrows it. Or skip the Leappad and get her some other tablet instead (am I going to find a decent tablet type thing for a comparable price?)? If it helps at all, she already has a Leapster and I think she is most interested in the Leappad for the camera capabilities.

I have 2 DD's (nearly 6 and 2.5) and they both like the LeapPad - yes, my 6 year old doesn't play with with it as much as she used to - she does still like it. Keep in mind - apps are $$ (part of the reason DD6 isn't as into it because I have only bought 2 games in 2 years). But they like the delivered items.

I would consider getting it (at $40!!) and figure that you will want to get her a 'real' tablet next year or so.

We bought one for my younger DS when they came out. He was about 5. He rarely showed much interest. But he had an older brother with a nintendo ds and then there has always been my iPhone or iPad with many apps on them. I think he has picked it up maybe a handful of times and only due to our encouragement. He much preferred all the other options in the house.

$40 is good and if you think it will get use then by all means go for it. Your situation is different with her being the oldest.

I don't know, I would say either get a real tablet that your entire family can enjoy (with a sturdy case) or get nothing at all. Maybe even a cheap real digital camera instead if you think it's the camera that is so appealing to your child.

LeapPads aren't anything like a real tablet and there won't be anything else in that price range that is worth getting. If it even gets played with at all, it will be quickly outgrown...I'd imagine within a few months.

I remember last year my in-laws purchased a LeapPad for my 3yr old nephew (was almost 4) for Christmas and when he opened it he said, "This is an iPad for babies". His parents already had an iPad that they all used and he was not interested in the "baby toy" at all. While a much larger cost up front, the iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab, etc are going to suit the entire family much better long term. There are so many educational apps for kids, not to mention interactive story books, etc.

You will not get a comparable grown up tablet for 50. We tried. Epic failure. Walmart is having a great price on the Nabi on Black Friday. We have the Nabi jr, it works great and is made to last. Nabi has built in games, their own app store(which I have never used) and you are able to use the Amazon App Store as well.

Walmart has a RCA tablet for 49.00 on black Friday. I have a 3 year old DS who loves his leappad but I wish we would have just gotten a real tablet with a good protective case because the games are so expensive. They are between 15-20 a game.
