My DS just rented an apartment on Beacon Hill for Sept. 06 instead of staying in the dorms. He had to sign a waiver for Lead Paint.

Is it dangerous for a 19yo to live in a lead paint building? We plan to paint the entire apartment with latex paint on the trim and walls before he moves in. It is one of the Brownstone Rowhouses that have lead paint on the trim of the windows outside. I just don't understand the waiver?
Anyone come across this before? Here I go worrying again

Its only dangerous if he eats the paint. And well, if he does that I'm pretty sure you have bigger problems :teeth:

In all seriousness, one of my nieces is developmentally delayed due to lead poisoning. My DS and DBIL hired a contractor to repait their 1800's home, and he took short cuts which sent lead dust into the air and the interior of the house (the area wasn't prepped properly to begin with).

It was a huge disaster, it cost them $30K out of pocket after the insurance paid what they would. Insurance won't pay "lead claims" but it will pay for contractors who mess up.

But as long as he's not licking the walls or eating paint chips, and theya ren't sanding the walls to prep them for painting, it's perfectly safe.

If there is paint with lead in it to be removed, you must use heat or chemicals, and the appropriate protective gear. And depending on many factors, sometimes the entire building needs to be sealed off, it's a big too-doo.

I've heard as long as it is well painted over and there is no dust or eating of the paint, it is fine!

And it's a bigger problem for children or people who are immersed in the work all day long. There are some laws for removal of lead based paint similar to asbestos abatement.

The lead paint will probably be under other layers of paint and more than likely is located in the trim paint to make it more durable. Lead based paint really is good trim paint. Unfortunately, it's not easily available. They still use it for road marking.
