Le Cellier - Why such mixed reviews?

From what I've read, the reviews on LeCellier seem to range to polar extremes. It looks as though it's the most popular restaurant on the DDP, but at the same time I've read more negative reviews on this restaurant than most. Since I'll be there for the first time in two weeks, I'm just curious as to why it would have such a wide variation of opinions. I'm not necessarily looking for your review (those are all over the boards), but I'm curious as to why you think this is so.

Maybe it's because of bi-polar experiences like ours.
:rolleyes1
We had great food here. Great appetizers. Their filet was better than Narcoossee's.

The service here was not good. I had no drink with my entree and had asked her for a refill. Twice. Maybe she just forgot, but I was finished with my food before I received another drink.

Given the great food, I'd be willing to make another ADR for this restaurant and just hope for a different server. It is a great use of a TS dining credit.

Welcome AmazingBagel:) Just about every WDW restaurant gets mixed reviews here. Two reasons for that: 1) Zillions of folks with different tastes, and 2) Serving zillions of people with different tastes results in mixed outcomes for each dish.

I can't imagine that anyone really got a terrible meal at LC. Whether or not it would measure up to your favorite steakhouse at home is unknown. Compared to the other eateries at WDW, I'd think you find it a least a bit above average. It is most difficult to get into. Make your ADRs asap.

It was ok, but not as good as I expected considering how difficult it is to get reservations. DH's steak had really good flavor (sirloin) but my filet was mediocre. (DH had an awsome filet at JIKO) The cheddar cheese soup was good, but not great. Service was good-our waiter made the night for us. Without him we'd have been really disappointed.

I'm not saying we wouldn't go back but I won't lose any sleep trying to get a reservation. I rate LeCellier as "just ok-good".

Le Cellier has kind of grown to mythical proportions. This invites extremes. I think it isn't quite as amazing as some say yet that invites people to say how bad it was when it doesn't measure up to expectations. We did not get to eat there this past October but that didn't ruin our vacation. Last Dec. we had a very good meal with very good service although the table next to us was having a tough time. Their steak was overdone twice.

It's a good-but-not-great steakhouse. If you are expecting a perfectly acceptable meal, it will meet (and possibly exceed) those expectations. If you are expecting best-meal-you've-ever-had, well, not so much.

I think a big part of it has to do with the hype. Lots of people go in expecting the best meal of their lives, or at least something very good, and sometimes our expectations are just too high. On the other hand, some people find it great because it meets their expectations.

I'd say expect a decent meal and go in with an open mind. If it's good, that's awesome. If it's ok or worse, just remember you're still in disney! So it can't be that bad!

We have always had very good food and service at Le Cellier. We always eat there since we first tried it in 2004 because we truly enjoy our meals. That being said, it's above average for WDW, I think, but not the best meal I've ever had in my adult life. Maybe people expect to be blown away, because of some over-the-top reviews...

Service was good. Steak was ok. I can go to Ruth's Chris anytime and get a much better steak and meal for the same price. There's so much hype about the place and it was a nice dinner, but not spectactular.

I suspect that it's a combination of factors, but two in particular:
1. It's what I'd call good comfort food. The cheese soup is good, but heavy. The bread is very tasty, but it's just bread after all. And the food is good but simple. I remarked to my girlfriend that I would have been entirely happy to sit there one night and dip the bread in the soup until I was full. My salmon was good, but it was farm-raised and unspectacular. Here's the point, I think.... people who love comfort food love the place, and report their love back to the board, whereupon people who are looking for a more sophisticated experience go there and are disappointed because that's not what the restaurant is about.
2. Because it's one dining credit, a lot of people on limited budgets go there as the highlight of their trip. It gets a reputation as the best restaurant in Disney because it's better than most of the other one credit restaurants, and for a lot of people without access to fine steakhouses (or in some cases the means to dine at them), it's better than Chili's and Friday's. Other people then go there thinking it's the best restaurant in Disney, when (in my opinion) a much better steakhouse is outside the International Gate in the Yaucht Club, and (from what I understand) another fantastic one down the line at the Dolphin. Said people are consequently disappointed.
Hey, this is just speculation, and maybe I'm wrong, but this is my best guess. Obviously different tastes are at work, as well..... I know a lot of people love Ruth's Chris, for instance, and I think they have tasty steaks (if over-buttered), but they're nothing compared to my favorite steakhouse in the world, Peter Luger. This kind of disagreement is part of talking about restaurants.... anyone may love the place (whether they're used to fine dining or not) or hate the place (again). I just think that in the case of Le Cellier and its wildly differing reviews, this is too simplistic an answer, and other factors are worth considering.
I don't know beyond that. I like comfort food as much as fancy dining, so I enjoyed myself there even if it wasn't my favorite place. As such, I could easily take issue with those who triumph it as an amazing place as well as those who think it's horrible. My best recommendation is nothing new.... make a reservation and try it yourself, free from prejudice-- the only way to make up your own mind!

I've yet to see a Disney restaurant that hasn't gotten completely mixed reviews. Well, V&As has pretty consistent ones but other than that, two extremes on most of them.

Alfredos used to be the most popular restaurant at WDW. You got extremes on that one, too.

To me, the problem with Disney dining is that it's inconsistent both in food quality and service. I can have a fantastic meal at a restaurant one trip and a horrible one the next.

We LOVE this restaurant. We love the atmosphere, the food, everything. Because its more popular on the dining plan, we have been there and seen people get turned away for not having ADR's. That creates a let down for something someone was looking forward to. Which can make it go on the negative list.

The disappointing thing we have found there, and this is OUR experience. We have never been really impressed with the service. We feel like its one of the least kid friendly places, were less willing to work with our kids allergies and never felt like the servers were really GREAT! Good, just not anything special.

Now, all of that to say, its not been a BAD experience at all.

We will eat there everytime because we love it, but we have had discussions each time we have been there as to why it hasnt been an all around fabulous dining experience...

If that makes any sense at all.

Part of the explanation for up and down experiences that people have at WDW restaurants may be the lack of non-Disney competition. In addition to little fear of losing customers (guests will just go to another Disney restaurant, unless they are willing and able to leave the property), it also inflates the prices relative to outside restaurants, which increases expectations.

BINGO!!! This happens with EVERY Disney restaurant. We've gone to some restaurants that have gotten rave reviews here and thought it was OK. We've gone to some restaurants that have gotten bad reviews and we enjoyed ourselves.

We read the menus, make our choices, and ignore everyone else's opinions unless I ask for it.

I think you'll find mixed reviews for every restaurant on property, even the ones that are really popular. Sometimes a restaurant (or server) has an "off" day, some people's expectations are too high -- there are lots of reasons for negative reviews. I would take everything you read with a grain of salt (pardon the food pun) and try restaurants that sound interesting to you. Even if you do get a not-too-good meal, it's only one meal out the whole week!

[PS - In my experience, I have only had one truly bad meal on my 5+ trips to Disney. It was at Raglan Road in October -- cold, soggy fish and chips and a very, very, very loud restaurant, where we had to shout loudly to hear each other. But lots of people just love Raglan Road! I must have just caught them on an "off" day. After several trips, I try not to let my meals be too important to my trip - I'm happy surprised when we have a good/great/outstanding meal, and don't get upset if the food is just okay. Sometimes I think we get ourselves so worked up on these boards about things by planning down to the smallest detail ("What should I order at this restaurant?" "Can I substitute mashed potatoes for french fries at XXXX restaurant?") that we set ourselves up for disappointment. I keep trying to remind myself to go with the flow - I'm on vacation!]

Thanks for all the feedback. The points are all very well taken. I appreciate it. I especially agree that how a persons expectations are going into it have a lot to do with the amount of enjoyment you get from it. The main thing is to remember it's vacation, and regardless if a server is having a bad day, make it a great day yourself and be thankful you're NOT the one working.

We really enjoyed our meal at Le Cellier but it was mad busy and very crowded, we could easily have joined in with the conversation next to us. The steak was well cooked but hubby said he would have been very disappointed if he had ordered the bbq filet. It was very strong in taste and I think a few ppl have said on the reviews it was not nice. I enjoyed it myself but I could see it would not be to everyone's taste.

Menus are available for all restaurants on allears.net and I always check menus out and read some reviews before deciding but as others have said you need to make up your own mind by giving it a try. The reviews just before we went 2007 for Contemporary Steakhouse were all fantastic but our meal was good but not great.

Enjoy eating your way round the world - we did!

Personal taste I guess. Now me, I never met a filet that I didnt like :goodvibes

We have never understood what all the hype was about. The food is ok and the service was ok. Too crowed. Service and food suffers when the staff has to process so many customers. The dining experience changes from enjoyable to get them in and get them out.

We do enjoy Le Cellier however, I personally do not think it is as wonderful as it is touted to be. I really don't understand why is is so hugely popular.

We have had good food and decent service, but nothing exceptional. We have had better steak dinners at other places.
