Layoffs

My mom was laid off early in the pandemic after 39 years (few months shy of 40 years) with the company and it was for all employees from the headquarters aged 55 and up with at least 5 years at the company (that's when you'd be considered fully vested in terms of 401K). They did give a severance package with added amount due to loss of health insurance.

Jeez, how was that not considered age discrimination?

I know right?! But that company was also known for letting people go just before they retired (sometimes 6 months sometimes a month before) even before the pandemic so it wasn't entirely unsurprising but it was still very unfair the way they did it, the way they made an age cut off like that, etc .

And people wonder why the young don't want to put in decades of work at one company anymore :sad2:

Yeah - I tell people change job every 2-3 years if you can.

Its the only way you will get a fair raise. At the end of the day the company does not care about you - you are not family. I am so tired of hearing we are family.
Had it not been for the pandemic and the "free" money lots of these companies would already be done IMO.
It saved a lot of companies that should have failed, and they repay it by outsourcing to countries where the salaries are 10-20% of what they are here.
Layoffs, outsourcing... but let's give Big Bizness another tax cut. Probably should take this over to the new controversial topics board.
Yeah - I was thinking that back on page one.

Or work in a Union shop.
Of course, you have to factor in the cost of changing jobs if there is a move involved.
I worked in an industry where changing jobs every 2 or 3 years is common. I had 3 jobs in 46 years. When I retired, my boss, who is only 6 years younger than me said she not be able to afford to retire because of how she spent moving all over every few years.
Oh, at in my industry, moving costs are rarely paid by an employer, and if they are, they might be capped at $1,500

I am a business owner in the North West. The economy went down in October 2022, The dive was sudden and noticeable. September 2023 I could feel the economy coming back. At his point it feels like we are a month or two before we are back to normal. The optimism is back, clients are opening there pocket books and buying again and the fear of being let go (or actually being let go) is gone. Quite a few of our clients who lost there job and come back once they got rehired.

With that being said I asked business owners on this board last year if they were seeing a recession. The business owners who responded from the west coast all were feeling one. The business owners from the mid west and south were not and felt the economy is booming. The economy is local. I hope the job losses in your area are little and those that are on unemployment get a job quick.

Yeah if you can get a union job great...not in my industry.
Also really depends on the union - I mean - a supermarket makes you join a union and really how much good does that do you.
Alternately - I got my relative a job with the teamsters union 20 years ago and its the best thing that ever happened to him.

That said - I tell younger folks to get union jobs and tried to get one of my kids to take one, neighbor would have got him in, but they are brainwashed by school and you cant tell them anything. Now he has a degree and works in a restaurant. Going for a masters in something pretty useless for the most part - and he admits himself he will probably still be working in the restaurant.

Also go into the trades - but again the Education Industrial Complex pushes college for just about everyone - and the big debt that may get you a job at Starbucks. Nothing wrong with working at Starbucks, but you don't need to get 100k in dept for that job.

Yeah people are starting to realize the benefits of going into the trades, but for many folks its far to late.

In my industry, a popular move is into public sector jobs.
