HI!! SO we are making a big trip to DL in 2 days. Since DD has never been to cali and our flight gets in early to LAX I thought we could drive down I-1 a bit along the coast and then cut across with 91E. Is there any place in particular that would be nice?? I dont really know the area--i know the San Fran area better and Half Moon Bay is one of my favorites! Thanks for your help!! SOrry I must sound so ignorant!

You will only travel a very short distance on HWY 1 before you turn east on Artesia Blvd which essentially runs directly into 91E so you not see much. They are some nice beaches and cities not to far from LAX and around the general area (Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo and Palo Verde). I guess it depends on how much time you have.

thanks...
was just looking at the map---do you think newport beach would be a good idea...Our flight gets in early anyways so thought could drive there and find a place to eat before trying to check-in...

Newport and Huntington Beach are nice areas if you have some extra time. I don't visit those beaches very often but they are nice areas.

Don't take Hwy 1 from LAX all the way to Anaheim. You'll be a bit disappointed as there are some long stretches that go right through the middle of cities where you can't see any sign of the ocean and you'll be fighting traffic lights and such.

Huntington Beach is nice and there are several nearby restaurants. I suggest you take the 405 fwy south from LAX and exit at Seal Beach Blvd south. It ends at Hwy 1 (PCH) where you can take a left (going south) toward Huntington Beach. If you go to the right instead you'll go towards Seal Beach (much smaller and a little quaint), but you'll be going the opposite direction from where you want to go. Stay on PCH for as long as you like. You'll start out going over Alamitos bay with the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station to your left. You'll pass into Sunset Beach where there are a few "celebrity" homes right along the beach to your right. Then you'll enter the Huntington Beach area for the next several miles. Part of that stretch is a state beach and part of it is a city beach. You will come to Main Street and after that a couple of very nice hotels on the left. If you continue on, PCH moves inland a little and you'll enter Newport Beach but you won't have a view of the coastline for a few miles, until you get near Crystal Cove State Beach. If you choose to go that far, you'll cross Newport Coast Drive and the community where several more celebrities live and the home of Pelican Hill Golf Club. If you do choose to go even further south (by now you'll have to backtrack to get to DL) then you'll enter Laguna Beach and, eventually, Dana Point.

OK ... so you can probably have figured some of that out by looking at a map, but if you have any questions about any of this, just ask.

I would not suggest going down that far unless you have plenty of time. Based on your original post, I would suggest you take PCH down to somewhere near the Huntington Beach pier, find parking, walk along the beach and then walk up to one of the several restaurants along Main Street.

The OP has already left, but this might help others.

There is a quite nice drive south of LAX that I call the "three piers" tour.

Take HWY 1 south, and make stops at the Manhattan Beach pier (there's a small aquarium good for small children), Hermosa Pier (see people playing volleyball); and the Redondo Pier (lots of shops and restaurants). Then backtrack north on HWY1 a couple of miles to Artesia Blvd.

For first timers to California, this short tour definitely has the WOW factor.
