My Dh came home and asked me if Bikes had the right of way on the road. I said YES. ( he knew that but wanted to make sure)

Then he asked if the bike was traveling in the middle of the road does he have the same right ? I said that if the bike was going the speed limit then I would think yes.

This is what happend.......

Dh was driving his truck down our very rual road. We have no sidewalks. There was a bike rider in the middle of the road NOT going 35 MPH. Dh waited intill he could pass and did. The bike rider gave him the finger so my DH stopped and asked if he did something wrong. The bike rider said he had the right of way. DH said he was not going the speed limit so he passed him. The bike rider then said some very choice words to Dh and spit on his truck.

Dh drove off...

So who had the right of way ?????

I'm not sure about this but logically, it seems, the bike rider should only be in the middle of the road if he is turning left.

Otherwise, he is supposed to be on the right side of the lane, going with traffic, and cars are supposed to pass him. One is not supposed to hold up traffic--that's a hazard in itself.

That bike rider was a jerk!

General rules

Ride at least three feet from the curb or parked vehicles or debris in curb area and in a straight line. Don't swerve in and out around parked vehicles.
Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
Sidewalk riding for bicyclists past the learning stage and being closely supervised by adults can be more dangerous than on the road, obeying traffic laws. It is also illegal unless the community has passed an ordinance specifically permitting sidewalk riding. This can be age-restricted, location-restricted or based on the type of property abutting the sidewalk.
Obey all traffic laws.
Be predictable! Let other users know where you intend to go and maintain an understood course

Bicycles are considered vehicles. They ride on the same side of the road as a car and not against traffic. They follow all the traffic signs and road rules (signal your turn, stop at red lights/stop signs).

Well when we are biking you say "passing on the left" to fellow bikers as a courtesy. To expect a car not to pass you is very odd.

My Dh said he was very polite when passing. Our roads are bad, I can see why the bike rider was in the middle of the road but also I can see why my Dh passed him.

My poor DH was so upset he stopped to find out why the guy gave him the finger only to be cursed at and his truck stit on !!!!

people like that made me so angry !!!!!

Thanks for the rules

Your dh had the right of way.

Share the road with bicycles. A motorist passing a bicycle must wait until it is safe to pass, then give adequate clearance. A cyclist should try to make it easy for a motorist to pass but only if it is safe. When it is not safe to allow a car to pass, a cyclist should use the full lane.

Was the bike rider wearing a helmet? If not, he was violating more things than common sense.
