Laur's, Andy and Eric do Orlando and Savannah Day One
Day One - 31 August 2010
So, here we are embarking on our second Florida trip in a year and this time we decided to tie in a visit to Savannah, Georgia for a few nights taking advantage of it's driving proximity. We had three glorious weeks to enjoy Disney, take Eric for his first visits to the Universal theme parks and explore a new city in a new state.
Let's start at the beginning then.
Our travelling day kicked off as travelling days tend to do, at stupid o'clock in the morning. 5.30 am in this case. Me and Andy managed to sneak around the house for a while before Eric woke up at 6.05 am. No doubt he was confused too because for once we didn't try to settle him back down or snuggle him in our bed. We all had some breakfast, got dressed, washed up and threw the last minute things into the packing. We managed to leave the house at 6.45 am and had a fairly uneventful trip to the airport.
Parked up, checked in and went through security - as Eric was not then 2 we were still allowed through the fast track route even though we'd checked in the stroller.
We went to buy Eric some fruit shoots for on the plane and I got a can of double shot expresso coffee for me (since becoming a mum caffeine is my staple diet). Stopped in at the cafe next for cups of tea and to share a breakfast panini - sausage, bacon and egg. Before making our way to the gate, we bought Eric a Handy Manny sticker activity book in Smiths.
By the time we made it to the gate we were able to get straight on the plane. Eric was very excited when he got his kid pack and kept telling me that a man gave him it!
Me and Eric had some orange juice and Andy had a glass of champagne before leaving on time. Eric was very excited to be going on a Jeremy (for those of you not parents of 2 year olds, that is the name of the plane from Thomas the Tank Engine). We had been talking about Jeremys for weeks and I don't think Eric could believe he was finally on one!
I had a Pepsi (whatever happened to Virgin Cola?!) and Andy had a Heineken and we all had some sour cream and chive pretzels which we were very excited about because we didn't get any in February! We thought it was yet another Virgin cost cutting measure (I still remember the days of Virgin Vie products in the comfort packs very fondly).
For lunch, I had chicken tikka masala, rice and palak aloo and Andy had burgundy beef. We also got salmon salad (inedible apart from the salmon, and I like plane food), cheese and crackers, bread roll, and lemon and orange mousse. Eric shared some of our lunches. Andy had white wine with his meal and I had water and then we both had a cup of tea and Andy had a Baileys.
After we ate Eric fell asleep on my knee for a while and me and Andy followed suit. When he wasn't asleep, Eric spent the flight watching Shrek a lot, playing with his engines, running up and down the aisle with Mickey Mouse (the stuffed toy, not the real one) and read comics and stuck stickers over everything. We had a tub of chocolate and a tub of vanilla Haagan-Daaz in the afternoon and then tea was a coronation chicken sandwich for me and a cheese and pickle one for Andy. We also got chocolate and raisin cookies which we couldn't finish because they were too sickly. I can't really remember what they were like but they must have been extremely sickly because I am a serious sugar junkie (the part of my diet not made up by caffeine contains jelly tots and cherry coke).
The flight landed about 2 pm and we got off and waited in a long security queue. Eric was suffering serious cabin fever by this point and kept trying to make a break for it. I ended up spending far too long throwing him up and down, which I lived to regret. When we eventually got to the front of the queue we were confronted by the new fingerprint machine and a rather rude man who when my prints didn't work first time told me that I would "have to do better than that". As a person with very low self-esteem I found it quite a worry that I couldn't even put my fingers down correctly.
Picked up and dropped off the luggage and took the tram to where the luggage was supposed to reappear. We waited a very long time, so Andy sorted out the rental car and then finally we were told that the luggage had gone to another floor so had to retrace our steps to collect it.
Picked out our car, a Dodge Jeep and drove to the Sheraton Vistana. We had intended on staying at the same one we did last time on the 535, but by accident had booked the one on I-Drive. We were going to change it but decided it was meant to be and actually ended up enjoying this one even more.
We checked in and drove round to the room and Andy unpacked whilst me and Eric cuddled on the sofa watching telly. He was content once he knew there was a telly and kept telling me he was watching his "programmes".
We drove to the big MaccyDs for tea. Eric had his usual Happy Meal of ugs (chicken nuggets) and chips, I had ugs too and Andy had a double quarter pounder with fries. We drank Sprite and Strawberry Fanta and E Had HiC.
We called in at the Walgreens next door and bought some Toy Story stickers and peanut butter cups (all essentials, of course) and then drove back to the villa and put Eric to bed. Andy went out to Walmart for proper supplies and I fell asleep and didn't wake up until 1 am! I noticed Andy had joined me so I just went back to sleep!
