Laurs and Andys Halloween Happiness Trip Day 1

Wednesday 19 September 2007
We set out on our epic 15 night journey at 6.30 am on Wednesday morning. Our usual taxi firm had been unable to take us, so Andys parents had kindly volunteered - I have a feeling they may be hesitant to do so in the future after all the traffic we encountered on the motorway. It culminated in us finally arriving at the airport at 8.45 am (over a hour longer than it should have taken us at that time of day) because of standing traffic due to some police incident which we saw no evidence of. Not the most auspicious start to the day as we were beginning to think we werent going to be allowed on the plane.
Anywho, finally arrived, checked in and were through security by 9.20 am. The flight started boarding at 10 am which gave us just enough time to grab some water and pringles to silence our protesting stomachs, and a paper for Andy. For the first time ever, I notice the name of our plane, Ruby Tuesday.
Settling into our Premium Economy seats, we checked out the new amenity kits which are basically the same as the old ones except that they are now in fancier pouches. Despite the reams of questionnaires I have filled in, they still havent re-introduced Virgin Vie products.
We had our welcome drink orange juice for me, and champagne for Andy, and set off almost on time at 10.45 am. Shortly after take off, we got more drinks diet coke for me, and Stella for Andy and sour cream and chive pretzels. We watched Pirates of the Caribbean 3 during lunch beef for Andy, and chicken korma for me, with the usual boring salad, new introduction of a warm roll, cheese and crackers, chocolate Gu pudding (gorgeous), white wine and water, followed by tea and coffee. Virgin have started using proper glassware, cutlery and crockery for Prem Ec, and it was a nice addition.
Im going to need to watch POTC 3 again as I kept falling asleep and then waking up and wondering whose side Will Turner was on at that moment, but I did think it was better than the second film from what I saw.
Passed the rest of the flight by sleeping, reading my magazine and Marilyn Monroe book and playing Tetris and Who wants to be a millionaire. Oh, and laughing at the man opposite us who had asked repeatedly since take off if he could have a glass of water for the landing! We had tubs of ice cream in the afternoon (toffee for me and vanilla for Andy) which I thought was a huge improvement on the cheap choc ices of the past. Tea came round at 5.45 pm an egg, and a cheese sandwich for me, and a chicken, and a ham sandwich for Andy with a chocolate chip cookie and 2 cups of tea each.
This was the longest flight we had experienced to Orlando and took 8 hours and 40 minutes, landing local time at 2.30 pm. I suffered the same fate as last year and felt like I had a cold for the rest of the day which I can only put down to the air conditioning.
Once through security, Andy left me with the bags whilst he sorted out the car. We had booked a convertible and ended up with a very flash Ford Mustang.
We checked into the Wyndham Orlando, where we were spending our first three nights, at 4.30 pm. I had gotten us a cheap deal on a suite thanks to membership privileges which was really nice, with separate sitting and sleeping areas. We also had a welcome gift of two bottles of water, two bottles of Budweiser and a box of crackers and some Babybels which I was most excited about.
Despite already having umpteen meals we were both hungry so we ate some cheese and crackers and shared a bottle of beer whilst watching Barca v Lyon in the Champions League on ESPN. We dragged ourselves away from the football to shower and freshen up, and then Andy made us a coffee as I was feeling really yucky and wanted to warm up. I fell asleep for half an hour after watching the Suite Life, before waking up and heading out.
We popped over to the Festival Bay Mall to visit Steve and Barrys, our new favourite shop since we discovered it in New York. We got a t-shirt for one of our friends for Christmas which says its only illegal if you get caught. We also had a quick look in Hot Topic, but I wasnt really feeling like shopping (OMG!) so we headed back to the car and into McDs for tea.
I had a chicken nugget happy meal with strawberry fanta and Andy had a Big Tasty meal with diet coke. On the way back we stopped in at Walgreens for some apple juice, rice krispie cereal bars and cherry coke, and I got some Sally Hansen miracle cure nail polish. We also stopped by the wine and beer shop next door to pick up some bud lite for Andy and some strawberry daiquiris and bahama mamas for me.
We got back to the hotel around 9.30 pm. Andy had a beer and I had a daiquiri and we snuggled up on the bed watching the American Kitchen Nightmares, before collapsing into bed at 11 pm.
