Laundry room etiquette

...an unattended child, appeared to be about 8 was taking buckets of sand from the playground and dumping it in the dryers on people's laundry...

OMG. As a dues paying DVC owner, I really hope WDW charged that family for each Dryer ruined by that. There is no fixing a dryer after that.

I agree with the be there when it ends or risk someone touching your clothes mentality! Unless you vacation IN the laundry room, there is no way to know how long the machine has been sitting and finished. It could take a few minutes for the owners to arrive, or days!

We were at Aulani a couple of weeks ago in a studio. We did laundry on 2 different days, 3 days apart. On the first day, we saw 2 separate piles of laundry piled on the counter. Both piles were STILL THERE 3 days later. Not sure what was going on with that, but if nobody had moved the laundry, those machines would have been occupied for a long time!

We ran into this problem while staying at BLT. Two of the three washers had clothes left in them for over two hours. DH went down to the laundry room without me and decided to only wash one load of our laundry. He was more patient than I was as I was ready to go down and take clothes out of one of the washers right away, but he talked me out of it. It took us two hours to wash and dry two loads of laundry using only one washer and the owner of the clothes never returned to take their clothes out of the two washing machines.

My only hesitation in taking the laundry out of a completed wash is that I don't want to accidentally leave some clothing item in the washer for when I use it. Toddlers socks are pretty little and easy to overlook.

He and his older brother who was about 12 and was responsible for the younger one were told to stay at the pool until their parents came down to the pool as they were "napping". Needless to say security went to get the parents. I have no idea if they were charged, we left after security arrived as the parents were mad they were bothered.

One should expect that your clothes will be taken out of the washer if they are done and someone is waiting.

I did not happen at Disney, but back in 2013, I was in a small pensione in Italy. I used the free washer, and set my cell phone alarm to come back down in 35 minutes, which was the listed time for the cycle. When I came back, right on time, a woman had just started the washer. I asked her where my clothes were. She said she had accidentally started the washer again, with my clothes in it. I now had to wait through another cycle. I would understand if the power button was in Italian, but it was in English! But Karma got her, as when she came back after my cycle, someone else had snagged the washer--because believe me, I was there 10 minutes early this time!

I had a similar incident on The Fantasy back in 2014, all washers and dryers were going and I sat and waited for them to end, one finished and I left the washing in the dryer for about 10 minutes and then removed it.
The woman whose washing I had removed came in asked "who DARE remove my clothes?".
She met her match that day and it was nearly on there and then in the laundry :teeth:
Obviously she thought her stuff was far more important than mine and I took great pleasure in telling her differently...

So I guess call me priveledged. I did leave my laundry and walk away. I wanted to pack up for our day at the pool and make sure my family was up. I noted the time to come back and when I did my wash cycle was already done and I had apparently missed it by a couple of minutes. My laundry was on top of the machines. I wasn't offended at all, in fact while my clothes were in the dryer the woman who moved them came in to check on her laundry which had finished a few minutes prior so I guess the times aren't accurate exactly.

Doing laundry our visit last month to AKL, there was a dryer sitting loaded but finished. I had to wait for both washing machines to finish with others loads (learning of the website to watch for the machines usage and time left) and after our two loads were done through the washers, that machine was still sitting loaded and done.

I emptied the dryer put their laundry on the folding table and put in both of my loads in the then 2 free dryers. When I came back just before the dryers were finished (love that website for tracking) the load I took out was still sitting there. Waiting for my dryers to finish, a person shows up and unapologetically grabs the load. I tell them I took out their load but did not fold (it had privates) as it had been done more than 2 hours prior at that point - they go on to say they put the load in the dryer before they left for dinner as Disney Springs.

This only goes to reinforce my approach - wait a reasonable period (15 minutes there being generous as someone could walk from anywhere on-resort to the laundry room in that time) and if ones load is finished but taking up a machine, it is open season on placing aside your laundry so another is not inconvenienced by your lack of courtesy.

Why do people who leave their clothes in the washer way after the cycle has been completed feel they have to make other people feel bad for having to make the decision to take the clothes out so others can use it. I dont want to touch your clothes! AND my time is just as valuable as yours!!!
I was doing the laundry at vfg today which only has two washers. Arrived 6 mins before one washer finished, proceeded to wait an additional 15 mins after the cycle ended to remove the clothes. That person returns 20 mins into my cycle time (29 mins cycle), proceeded to "thank me" in a snide manner.

If you dont want others touching your stuff you should have been there 30+mins ago.

Why are people so inconsiderate?

The second woman was almost angry that the woman touched her things which was why the first woman was mortified.
The second woman was just acting entitled. She didn't own the machine. If her items are left in it after the cycle, finding them respectfully placed to the side so someone else could begin their own laundry is what she should have expected.

I live in a building with a laundry room. People are expected to be considerate about being on time to empty their machines. If not, then it's totally acceptable to remove their load from the machines. They may not like it, but tough toenails for them - next time they should be on time.
