I have a black velvet blazer that I wear casually over jeans. I wore it Tuesday night when I went to photograph a concert, and this venue allowed smoking, Yuck! (It's a shame too, becuae my photo's weren't so good because I felt miserable during the show and had to leave long before it was over :( )

At any rate, the jacket smells like smoke. It's dry clean only, and doesn't actually need cleaning, just some way to get the smoke smell out. (I had it tucked in my gear bag through most of the night.)

Can I toss it in the dryer with a few dryer sheets to freshen it up? Or will that damage the velvet?

Have you tried Febreeze? I had smoke get in my new coat last week & I sprayed Febreeze on it & it got rid of them smell

Use Dryel. That's the at-home dry cleaning stuff. You just put the jacket in the Dryel bag, with the Dryel sheet, and pop it in the dryer. Stuff comes out smelling very fresh (besides being clean). We use it all the time for cashmere sweaters and such.

I thought of that, but I'm not sure how Fabreeze will affect the velvet, KWIM?

I thought of that, it's safe for velvet? I've never used it, I have very few dry clean only items anymore.

We've never used it with velvet, but Dryel is very good with most delicate items. I know we've used it with cashmere and other items like that.

Another vote for Dryel. I've used it on Silk rayon & even suade. Freshens it right up.

Cool! I guess I'll be picking up some Dryell on the way home from work!

Thanks everyone!

I don't think I would put it in the dryer at all.

I would first try hanging it outside for a day. If that doesn't work, maybe try Febreeze sprayed on the inside only. (Try one small spot first and let it dry, to see if it affects the fabric.) After that, if nothing else works, I would give in and take it to the cleaners. It's still cheaper than a new velvet jacket. Good luck! I hate smoke and that smell it leaves on my hair and clothes, too!

I hang or set my clothes outside (even in the winter) for a couple days to get the smoke smell out. It works for me.

I've had it hanging in the garage since Tuesday night when I got home from the concert--didn't even want to take it in the house. It is better, but the smell lingers... Unfortunately I want to wear it tomorrow morning--I'm flying out for a photo shoot with another band, it's gonna be a long day LOL!

Luckily the jacket was almost free. I had someone give me a coupon for $50 off any purchase of $150 at NY & Co. My purchase was $151, and the jacket was $50--so... :)
