Laundry in board

For those sensitive to soap: Bring some white vinegar; use it as a fabric softener. It gets rid of the soap and works well as a fabric softener. And use very little soap. You can always wash small things (undies, socks, etc) in the sink and hang in the shower to dry.

If you have or see troubles in the laundry room (machines not working) tell your room host. We were on the Alaska cruise and the machines weren't working right. I called maintenance a couple of times.......no one came. I just happened to mention it to a room host.....It was fixed almost immediately. The host let me know to always tell the room host when we have any problems like this.

So here is a question...

We bring vinegar with us on board for other reasons (needed to disinfect a medical device), so we have some. BUT, I have never used it for the laundry because

I cannot figure out which dispenser slot which compound (detergent; "fabric softener" (aka vinegar)) goes in -- there are no labels !! (so we put the detergent in the washer tub, then clothes on top)

Anyone know ??

My dispenser at home looks like this ( https://i.ytimg.com/vi/eAOyRp0kh8Q/maxresdefault.jpg ) and is nicely labeled...

I did a bunch of laundry on my Fantasy cruise last yr. 3 kids plus WDW before meant about 6 loads which took me about 4 hrs to finish. I had trouble w multiple machines, had to call maintenance, ended up hauling my stuff to the other end of the ship to find a machine that worked and was not full- even though it was after midnight. I ended up finishing around 3 in the morning. It was annoying, but it would have been really expensive to pay by the item. Im a night owl anyway, so the late night was no big deal.

I brought a pop up hamper with handles and that made it so much easier to carry everything back and forth to the room

I use HE tide pods and had no problem w too much detergent- I don't know if this is more a problem on the classic ships?? But, I'd like to know if this is the case before we take the wonder to Alaska.

Finally, several people apparently thought that they could leave their laundry in the machines until morning... I was in several rooms over 4 hrs and no one came for their clothes. I ended up moving them to the side and placing them back in the machines when I was done. I hated to do this, but also found it rude for them to monopolize half of the machines for the whole night.

in contrast to the laundry service, I thought the dry cleaning was very reasonable- we put our formal clothes and a couple of hubbies shirts out shortly after embarkation and they were pressed the next morning.

Why bother to put the clothes back in the machines? That just tied up the machines so other people couldn't use them. I moved some clothes once, set them aside, and they were still there at the end of the cruise several days later.

I think the laundry room on board choice is as simple as it is personal. My sister's family and mine traveled together, and she was clearly, "I'm not doing laundry on VACATION." And I was definitely, "I'm not bringing twice as many clothes when I can do wash once halfway through."

So I chuckled at the number of suitcases her family had, and she chuckled on the evening we had to deal with the hunt for open machines and rotating our clothes through them.

Right now, half the people reading this identified with the one option, and the other half identified with the other option. (except for the group that just pays for the laundry service. That is fine too.)

I know for me I have to walk to a laundromat to begin with, so I am not schlepping to the laundry on ship too. I have never had issues getting enough clothes packed - even just carry-on ( and FWIW that was a 10-night trip for the Great Alaskan Running Cruise so I really needed three outfits for 4 days and 2 for the others - all in carry-on). No laundry done on the cruise. Easy peasy.

I wish that each machine (washer or dryer) had a dry erase board on it, that people wrote their room # on. So , when they are leaving their stuff for HOURS in a machine, you can call them. I moved stuff out of a dryer (or 2) last summer in Alaska. It was just so rude. Had no problems with the machines, but the dryers were not my favorite -- they seemed too hot to me. We brought Wisk pods from home since I am allergic to anything else. It worked fine, but I do love the suggestion about vinegar-- how much vinegar do you add?

I use about 1/2 cup to get rid of soap; 1/4 cup as a fabric softener

On one of my cruises I saw that someone had brought a tiny little dry erase board and they put it on the dryer themselves. It just had a room number on it and nothing else and at first I didn't know what it was saying and then I figured it out and thought it was genius! Everyone else that walked in liked it too. But they were timely and came and got their clothes within a minute of it going off so it wasn't necessary I guess but still a nice gesture.

We bring our own repositionable dry erase, one for the washer, one for the dryer.

I use these: http://elmers.com/product/detail/E6302

There are also other designs:

I make a note about needing to use multiple cycles to allergies, so I will be back to restart the load at X time, and put our room number.

Remember the washers are HE...and if a jack-idiot before you uses the non-HE packets of Tide sold at Target, you will spend 2-3 loads just getting all of the soapy suds out of the washer. I was PISSED when this happened. I can't imagine how soapy the previous person's clothes must have been!!
Those same jack-idiots also seem to put the powder in the wrong holders. Two loads we did yesterday I first had to scrape partially dissolved soap out of the fabric softener and bleach holders. It takes a second to see the words but please put the soap used in the right dispenser slot.

Of course, not everyone reads/understands English. Could be part of the problem.

Are there words ? On the dispensers I looked at when I have done laundry there were no labels for the dispenser slots, so I didn't use them.

There are words there but they were difficult to read with the coating of undissolved detergent on the words which I cleaned off when trying to clean the other dispensers.

The use of a front loading HE machine may be foreign and unknown to anyone regardless of language but not knowing how a machine should be used is no reason to put soap in every dispenser slot. Sadly one I had conversation with there did just that I explained their error to (they speaking English). Nothing is worse that soap in the fabric softener section especially with darks and a cold cycle as more often then not a full rewash of the load is required.

Ah, ok. I will have to check closer on our next trip.
