I buy something (powder) at the dollar store and ziploc it up so if it breaks open in the luggage (it never has) it won't make a mess. I still have some Purex sheets and will use those until they are used up (those were great for this).
Agreed, I generally pack mine in a small knock-off Tupperware-type container. Earlier this year I toted some to South Africa stuffed into the toes of my hiking boots -- that worked just as well. They traveled just fine!
I used the Purex sheets too, but can't find them anymore. I bought some arm and hammer pods - but they are powder not liquid. I am packing them in a ziplock along with dryer sheets too.

This is exactly what I do. Pods in a small Tupperware. This is a lifesaver at DvC and anywhere we travel. Also the crystal fabric softener is perfect for traveling too.
We bring the pods and also love the Shout Color Catcher sheets. I don't like to sort my laundry when I'm on vacation and the color catchers are great when you throw all the colors in together.
Does every DVC resort have the same machines? We were at BCV in a studio last week and when I did laundry, the machines seemed very new (dark grey ones, unfortunately I don't remember the brand) and I remember seeing that they are HE compatible.
