Laugh or Cry....HS Senior Prom 2009 Long Sorry

WOW, I would have a hard time letting her out of the house. She is BEAUTIFUL!!!

As for the OP, sorry, I'm a bad mom, I wouldn't go through all of that for a prom. I don't think it makes anyone a good mom or parent to give in to a child's every desire. Maybe it is a regional thing but I have never heard of hiring someone to come to your house to do make-up, let alone having to spend $200 on top of that to BUY the make-up.

Can I just ask what I said to make anyone think that they were a bad mom if they didn't do what I'm doing?

The cost of the Mac makeup I would believe is standard. And for the record she usually buys other types of makeup...but this is a special occasion.

Seriously, I didn't post this to offend or get anyone upset...just wanted to share something.

You're a great mom. I hope your DD's prom night is really enjoyable!! Be sure to post pictures-- after all her primping and money spending, we want to see how gorgeous she looks!!

I went to my DFiance's Senior Prom and then we went to mine. His prom was pretty cheap.
Tickets: $50 a piece (he paid..)
Dinner: some horrible chinese place that we went with his friends (he paid..)
Corsage: he paid again..
Breakfast the next morning: at someone's house
Limo: I think we both paid $70??
My Dress: I got on sale for like $60-- it was gorgeous!

Hmm.. maybe I thought his prom was cheap because HE paid!!

My prom on the other hand...
Tickets: $85 a piece (we got in for free- my mom was a teacher)
Dinner: included
My dress: $20 on sale!! I'm a good bargin hunter
Limo: free- my friend's dad owned a limo place
Corsage: $30-- would've been $40 but the florist messed up? Apparently she used wrong color creme? That's what she told DFiance.
After prom: WE WENT TO DISNEY WORLD. That was all I wanted to do- I didn't care about the hotel room or drunken after parties. So, we got in the car the next morning- like 3am after going home, taking a powernap, etc. and we drove our butts to MK and then came back that night!

It was so much fun.

WDW would have been my choice too!

Just out of curiosity...how long do kids in your area stay at the prom? It's incredibly frustrating that at the school I teach at they only stay for about 1 1/2 hours max before leaving to go eat in their dresses. The junior class spends two years fundraising, buys $5000 worth of decorations, devotes two whole days transforming our cafeteria into a prom worthy venue and then they leave by 9 pm. :scared1:

Every year I say it's ridiculous and we should change it, but nothing ever happens.

The majority stay for the whole prom....which is 8 pm to midnight. We don't have a junior prom.

I didn't get that impression from you at all. I think that for most posters here, we are just exchanging information on what we did for our kids. I'm going to post a picture of mine tomorrow. I think that we all ought to do that. It's fun looking at all the kids dressed up!

here's one from my DD's group

Cassidy is the one in all blue (the dress was $8 at Dillards....you read that right...I got a steal!!) Her jacket (it's still cold at the end of April around here) and shoes were $12 a piece. I am a fierce bargain hunter.

I loved looking at all of the pictures of the kids because it is such a diversity in tastes and dresses!!

As an alternative, the girls with the boquets, I guess they're not into it, but a hair piece floral clip would be nice and be seen the entire night. For a hand, the school could purchase presentation boquets as part of the ticket package as a memory keeper. we pressed our corsages.

But what ever keeps kids happy these days. soon they will be the adults, and hopefully remember the emotional and financial sacrafices we made for them as the push us in our wheel chairs and wipe "OUR" noses. :rotfl2:

My prom was 2 years ago. My dress was like $50, and my shoes were pretty cheap, too.

My mom wouldn't even let me get my hair or nails done. If I asked her if I could get my makeup done she probably would have slapped me in the face for even suggesting it (jk).

I will admit that I looked much better in my cheapo outfit than the table full of pregnant girls with $200+ maternity prom dresses.

My prom was 4 years ago, and my dress was $12 (found it on Ebay!!) I got my hair done and nails done.. That ended up being $45 for both because the salon I went to had a special for prom going on. We drove to a restaurant about 45 minutes away and I think dinner cost $25. I went with friends, so I didn't have to spend money on flowers. The tickets were $20. I really wish I would have saved my money and just not gone.

The pictures of all of these beautiful young ladies and gentlemen are awesome....Everyone post yours....I love looking at all the smiling faces and dresses....and yes...that was a great buy for that dress....it's really nice!

Oh what a thought....I think my nose may be running if I wait for my DD to wipe it...Oh that was the best...I needed a good laugh:rotfl2:

babytrees, that's my kind of deal! And what a good looking group!

Wow! So that's typical prom in NYC? I've always known "big city livin" wasn't for me - now here's more proof!:rotfl:

I've gone through it with both my daughter and my son and I've gotta say, it was like you described IN NO WAY!!! Sure, there were dresses to buy or tux rentals, shoes, hair, jewelry, dinner, etc. but that's where the similarity ends.
Around here, weddings don't get all the attention that prom seems to for you! :confused3

My son went to his senior prom last weekend. He and his friends made all their plans less than a week before. They all went to dinner, to the prom, and then afterward they all went to........ wait for it...........

TACO BELL!!!! :lmao:

And to hear them talk, they had the time of their lives! Guess they don't know what they're missing...:rolleyes1

That's what prom is like here too. I can't imagine paying what the OP did for prom. It is just one night. If prom is NY is nicer than many weddings, I hate to think what the OP will have to pay when her DD gets married.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, I just can't imagine it.

A friend of mine just had a wedding for her DD and the cost of the catering hall was $250 per head. And that was "nothing special"......1 hour cocktail hour 4 hour reception....traditional choices of beef, chicken, fish......vienesse table (spelling)....etc.

I dont want to think about what my DD's wedding will cost me either! LOL;)

They go to prom first then eat?? :confused3 I've never heard of that before....I'm from Ohio and DD has gone to high school in NC, ND and Texas and they always eat before prom. I wouldn't stay long either if I was hungry!

I've never seen a prom at the school either. DD's prom this year is in Downtown Ft Worth.

I've told both my kids that if they will have a small wedding, we will give them a nice honeymoon instead. My daughter is thinking Disney World!

Our prom sign in is from 7-7:30. The closest town with a good selection of restaurants is 30 miles away, so it's not really feasible to eat before prom unless they want to be like old folks and hit the early bird specials! :rolleyes1

There is a ton of food at prom, but mostly finger foods. Kids nibble at prom and then go to eat after.

I guess we have old kids in our town because prom starts at 8pm, but most of them leave around 5 to drive to Indy and back for dinner. We don't have anyplace really special in our town which is why they make the drive to Indy and back.

Its strange how different all the customs are in different areas of the country!

I am not sure if they serve food at the prom or not, DS has never said, but I do know they serve snacks at post prom, but they never have enough so they usually go out to eat after the after prom party!!

No wonder they all leave if the prom starts that early! I've never seen a prom start before 8:30 or 9 and that would be plenty of time for them to go eat.

If all the kids leave after only an hour or so I think I would be causing a big stink to change it....

Our started between 6:30-7:00 and they had dinner there. Grand march was at 4:00. They let prom-goers out of school early. I have no idea WHY they didn't go with a Saturday night prom, but whatever. I'm sure a day out didn't kill them. But geez, what about those poor kids not going to the prom? Talk about adding insult to injury.

I put this pic up in my prom thread, but here's my son and his GF (she's such a sweetie). And one of him alone in a candid moment.

DD's prom was last night. Arrival started at 5:45. They make a very big deal of it. The prom is at a fancy hotel (the Mount Washington at Bretton Woods). The driveway into the hotel is long and the entryway is grand. The kids work at being creative in how they arrive. One group was delivered by grandparents driving a Winnebago - the adults were planning to wait for the kids and take them to a post prom party. My DD arrived in a decorated van with several friends.

Unfortunately for the group that was arriving in the back of an antique fire truck (brought up through Crawford Notch on a flatbed truck) it poured at arrival time. A bad thunderstorm went through the area. The kids just put up umbrellas and had their great arrival.

We spent more on DD's dress than we wanted to - about $130. And then another $80 for alterations. And I spent $30 on hair. But she got her bag and shoes for $1 each at the local church thrift shop. The shoes were brand new - still had the tags on them.

She paid for her own prom ticket - $65. So all in all not bad compared to what I am reading other people spent.
