Late night flights...

How do you find them? I know the airport in our town doesn't have them. I think the latest flight out is around 4pm. My DH won't get off work on the Saturday before we leave until at least 5pm. DD may be going on down that morning with my parents. If this is the case then I would love to find a late night flight out of an airport near us. We're in central Virginia so Richmond is 2 hours, Greensboro about 2 hours, DC/Baltimore is about 3.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic.

I can't seem to find any but I know I hear of people taking them. I would be great if DH and I could find a late night flight like around 10pm or 11pm or even later if need be. Then we'd just get a cheap room off property since our reservation doesn't start until the next day and sleep in a little that Sunday morning before heading over to meet DD and my parents at the resort.

Any ideas?

I did a quick check on Orbitz, there are no evening non-stops from Richmond or Greensboro so it makes a late night flight hard because you would have to connect. From Dulles, there is a 9:45pm on United.

In general, flights leaving that late are few and far between and tend to be scheduled out of so-called "hub" airports, where passengers are being flown in from a bunch of airports to connect to other flights. Unfortunately, none of the airports on your list are major hubs. There may be a couple of 9:00 p.m.-ish flights out of Dulles or Baltimore that connect somewhere else before going to Orlando.

Normally, there are two groups of flights that fly during the night:

  • International Flights
  • Cross-Country (New York - L.A.) Flights

And these flights normally depart only from the largest airports in the U.S.

Thanks for the responses. It was just wishful thinking. If I have to pay for a hotel room that night I figured it might as well be in orlando instead of at the airport up here somewhere. Looks like we'll be taking an early morning flight then.

Yeah, the airline industry has really axed all their late night (and early morning) flights.

Those that want to work a full day and still fly somewhere are pretty much SOL unless you live in a major HUB area.

I used to be able to do that from my hometown, then that option disappeared a couple of years ago.

I've since started driving to Nashville to have the same option on Southwest, but in the last 6 months they have also taken away that option from me, they've cancelled the 8:something PM flights to/from MCO they used to have.

Now in order to get a full 8 before leaving on vacation, I have to work 6am - 2pm.

If the 6:something pm flights go away, we'll just drive.

Cause if I have to wait until the next morning to leave, I can get there at the same time by driving partway the night before and finish the drive the next morning.

What I don't understand is that practically every time I was on one of those flights it was full, it's not like they were flying an empty plane every evening.
