I hope your dog is feeling better soon and can come home! Thanks for the info, I have a 12 yo golden retriever and it is helpful to know of what possible ailments could be ahead for the senior dogs. ('Grover' already has the hip dysplasia problem, but is still doing really well with it). Now, if he exhibit any of these symptoms, I will try to remain calm...and not think doomsday immediately, LOL.

Also made me feel good that your lab is 15!!! That is so awesome, gives me hope that 'Grover' has more good years ahead of him. You worry when they start getting u in the years! Also, it seems when I tell someone my larger dog is 12, they automatically talk about how he won't be around forever. I know people mean well...but it isn't what I want to hear... I want at least 12 more years!!!!

DopeyRN I can't even imagine how scary that must have been! Watching my dog was just, wow, so scary I can't even imagine experiencing it myself. I'm so sorry to hear that but I'm glad things are better now.

poohandwendy - i get the same thing! as soon as I tell people his age the conversation automatically turns to death. This was his first real health problem other than a kidney infection, and he is still quite active. everyone tells me i should have started to prepare for his death by about age 12 but I'm not even close to being ready at age 15!

What beautiful dogs! We're supposed to get a dog this fall and I would love one of these but DH keeps suggesting a smaller dog. But labs and retrievers are such nice dogs IMO.

poohandwendy, grover is gorgeous! Frisky's mother was a long haired golden retriever! (his dad was a short haired white lab). He got the looks of his dad but the wonderful golden color of his mom.

I visited Frisky this morning! He has stopped shaking (mostly, it's just slight now) and the nystagmus (jerky and twitchy eyes) have almost completely stopped!!!! He has a slight tilt of his head to the right side which the doc says may never go away... but he can stand a little bit on his own now without falling down and the doc said if he gets better or even stays the same, he should come home early next week!!!!!!!!!

LMAO...I frequently tilt my head too...it is an involuntary thing that balances the inner ear....good grief...I am an old dog!

He is beautiful and looks very good for his age!!!

Good news to report... he can come home today! I get to pick him up at 4pm!!!!

He can walk, but probably can't do stairs yet so we'll have to carry him between the garage and apartment for walks... and it looks like he WILL have a lingering tilt but overall a good recovery! Thanks for your support and I'm know Frisky thanks you for all the pixie dust!
