I will be checking into the Contemporary around 6PM. I was hoping for a free upgrade(aren't we all). Do you think I have a better chance with it being late instead of early? Just wondering if anyone has any insight.
Thanks

I personally think it's just luck and it's probably been done by the room assignor anyway.

We checked into the Beach Club at 9:30 am, we got an upgrade to consierge from standard room. The person checking us in, didn't do it, it was already in the computer.

Get back to find out that another diser who checked in around midnight the same day was also upgraded to concierge and right next door to us.

So one early and one late??? It's just pixiedust!!!!!

One time when we were checking in at AKL and offered an upgrade, the CM told us it just pops up in the computer and they have no control over it.

Never occured to me that the room assigner might be responsible. :)

I got a free upgrade last time I went and we checked in around 11 am. Actually, when I had booked my room, I had asked for a preferred room, but there wasn't any. So, I asked when I got there if I could upgrade to a preffered room (totally prepared to pay, of course) and was told by the CM that I was already upgraded to one for free.

Back in May 2000 when my family and I were upgraded at the Contemporary from the Atrium Club to the Tower Club, we were told it was done before in the computer and it had nothing to do with when we had arrived.

Free upgrades are not nearly as common as people think they are. The vast majority of guests get exactly what they paid for.

Most upgrades are done for the convenience of the resort: removing rooms from service so maintenance can work on them, evening out room counts for housekeeping. These are assigned ahead of time, and it won't make a bit of difference whether you check-in at 7AM or 11:30PM.

If you really want the upgraded room category at the Contemporary, you should call and book it. Your chances of a free upgrade are slim, at best.

We checked into the CR around 6pm and were upgraded from Garden Wing to Bay Lake View in the tower. We were only there for 1 night, so not sure if that had any impact:confused3 .

Of all the times we have stayed at Disney, that is the ONLY time I have ever received an upgrade.

Of course the room was AMAZING and I would totally stay there again!

We were upgraded twice at AKL, last August and again in February. Both times we got to the resort pretty late. In February it was midnight before we got there, so I tend to think the rooms are predetermined.

15 trips since '99 and I've never gotten an upgrade. I guess that perhaps I may have had one at the CR in '04...we booked a garden room and ended up with a lake view in the poor old North Wing. But it was my birthday so that could have had something to do with it.
I really don't think there are all that many upgrades happening at WDW. We may hear about some, but in the big picture, it's a very small number.

2004 booked standard POP got preferred room @ POP
2005 @ booked standard ASSp--no upgrade, not even what we booked-were moved to standard @ASMU
2006 booked WL concierge--got the exact view I requested
2007 booked WL standard got exactly as booked
2007 booked WL standard got WL courtyard view

So I say my odds are pretty high in getting exactly what I wanted or better. I'm hoping for some pixie dust this September...but if not I'll be happy with what I booked.
