We got back late Friday night from a 7 day trip. We have never seen it so crowded, and we were there in 2002 from Christmas to New Years.
We arrived Sat about 7 p.m., took advantage of the teacher's rate and stayed at the Swan. It was cool that evening. We didn't go to any of the parks, we just had a bite to eat at Beaches & Cream. We had to wait about 45 minutes, used the Q&C vouchers, so it was totally worth it. After dinner we walked around a little bit, then went back to the hotel and got ready for bed. Like the Dolphin, the bedding is just heavenly. I almost didn't want to move to the BWV the next morning. I am going to ask on the Swan/Dolphin thread what they use, because I have to get it for my own house. It is the most luxurious bedding I have ever slept on. The BWV should take a lesson and get some of those pillows!
We checked into the BWV Sun about 11. Our room was not ready, but she said we got 2 of our 3 requests. We got non-smoking, and 5th floor, but it really wasn't all that close to the elevators. It was a preferred 1BR #5024. We had a view of Luna Park pool, and the canal if you looked to the right. It had a double balcony but no awning or any type of covering, so you really couldn't sit out on it in the blazing sun. We never heard any noise from the neighbors, but it was a little annoying to be hearing kids screaming every night in the pool at 11:20 p.m.
We went to Epcot and had lunch at Le Cellier on the Premium Lunch voucher. They cost $30 each, but lunch came out to about $85, so it worked out well for us. We knew this was a very popular week, so rides were not our main objective. We went to all the outside shows that we used to never have time for before DVC. We saw the British Invasion, Off kilter, the Japanese drummers, etc. We walked through any gardens we came across. We had a great day. No pressure. Later that evening we saw Illuminations and walked back to our room. No fighting the crowds to get out of the park.
Monday we went to the pool for awhile then took the boat over to MGM about 4p.m. There were no fast passes for RNR or TOT or LM, so we just strolled over to our Fantasmic dinner at Mama Melrose. Kevin, our waiter, was excellent. We got to our reserved Fantasmic seats at 7:45 for the 8:30 show, and it looked like the entire seating arena was already filled to capacity. I never saw it so crowded, so early. Leaving the show, we couldn't believe how many people were in line for the 10p.m. show. The line went halfway down the street. It was a sea of humanity. It's rough without the reserved seats.
Tuesday we went to AK. Had breakfast at the Rainforest Cafe. It was excellent. We've eaten there before, and I thought it was okay, but this time, it was really very good. Since AK is not a favorite of ours, we just went on the Safari and then IABL with our fast pass. We went back to the pool after that. For dinner, we went to Cinderella's Castle. This was our first foray into MK this week. My goodness, you couldn't even walk, it was so mobbed. After dinner, at 5 to 9 (Spectro time) the wait time was 55 minutes for Haunted Mansion. We couldn't believe it. There was a line out the door for Small World. It was incredible. I don't think we went on anything that evening, but we did get a great spot for Spectro and Wishes was fabulous as usual.
Wed morning we had breakfast at Crystal Palace. There was not much hope for rides. Timekeeper had a four hour delay for fastpass. Buzz was a 60 minute wait, Peter Pan was 80. It was crazy! We walked around dumbfounded, but the greatest thing was we kept saying to each other, "We went on that in Feb., we'll just wait till we come back in Oct." The DVC changes your whole perspective. I really felt bad for people who were experiencing WDW for the first time. I can't imagine they could have gotten on too many rides, and I felt bad that they may not come away with the same love for it that we have. We just went on COP and TTA then went back to the pool, again. That evening we went to Brown Derby and had a great dinner. One interesting thing that happened as we were checking in was a woman came up and said she had reservations for 14. They had no record of it. She said she called that morning. They said they had nothing. She quietly walked away. If it was me and I really did have PS's, I'd be loud. She had no confirm number or anything. How she thought they were going to squeeze in 14, I'll never know. All week long, every place we went, we heard them tell people, "Sorry, no walk-ins."
Thursday we finally got to sleep in, when we got up, we went to the pool. I forgot to mention that they had a CM going around checking room keys at the pool. While my DH was on the balcony, he saw a couple evicted. We were asked 2 different days for our room key. We spent most of the afternoon at the pool, then got dressed up for our last night's dinner at the Yachtsman Steakhouse. We had the chateaubriand...to die for.
Friday we had an interesting thing happen also. The housekeeper came to the door about 10:30. I personally handed her the tip because she did a wonderful job on T&T day, and told her we would be out shortly. About 11 o'clock, I called for the bellman and was told, "It will be at least 45 minutes to an hour. Just tell the housekeeper you are waiting for the bellman." And we did wait for 50 minutes. That never happened before, and we have checked out on several Fridays.
We spent that day in Epcot. We had a late lunch at Yakitori then got picked up by FL Tours and headed home. We had a great trip. Very relaxing, and just what we needed.

Susan- It sounds like you guys took everything in stride and had a great week. I totally agree that DVC really changes how you feel about rides. If the line is to long, we always say, "Lets just catch that on our next trip".

One thing occurs to me as I read about extra-heavy crowds. People have been complaining lately about maintenance and service at WDW, and blaming them on budget cuts. Those cuts were probably inevitable given the way that 9/11 decimated the tourist industry. But now, as tourism picks up, the funds for training and maintenance could increase as well. So whenever we hear about heavy crowding in the parks, let's all hope for a return to the standards we've experienced in the past.

Thanks for the post auntsue. I appreciate hearing about the wait times for the rides. And yes DVC does give you a different outlook on rides and your time. We just had someone come back from Disney. They were there last week. They stated that they arrived at MK at 8:00 a.m. They took in all the rides they wanted to in tommorow land in an hour. After that they crowds were unbelievable.

If you go to The Westin Hotels website, You can purchase online all the necesseties needed for the Heavenly beds.::yes::

I was there the same week you were auntsue and I found that everyday closer to Easter the parks were more crowded. We went right into Magic Kingdom on Saturday night the 3rd on everything we wanted to and by Thursday the 8th the park was packed at night. But we were only going in to see Wishes and Spectromagic so we didnt wait on lines for any rides. We also have the same attitude that if something had a line we would just go somewhere else. We were at Animal kingdom on wednesday and it was crowded and we just decided to try Epcot and it was empty at dinner time! We walked right on everything.

We visited over last Thanksgiving week and the MK was similarly out-of-control. I had my Mom in a wheelchair and I literally couldn't push her through so tight a crowd -- it was just a sea of bodies between Peter Pan and the Carrousel area. Yikes! We left and after that, spent the week swimming. It is wonderful to say "We'll do these rides NEXT time!"

Seems like any holiday time is crazy nowadays! Glad you had fun regardless.

Thanks for the report. It sounds like you set a very relaxing pace.

We were just in WDW, too. Although I expected crowds - and we're usually there around Christmas/New Years, so we are used to them - it definitely seemed more crowded than usual. At MK, a CM shared the opinion that they are finallly rebounding from 9/11 tourism drop. (As a sidebar, we were in Disney 9/11/02 - actually had CMs come up to us while walking through Epcot and thank us for coming. That day we really all seemed like an extended family in the park.)
We found it helpful to relax at the pool and visit MK from 9:30 p.m. till park close at midnight. We also went to parks that didn't have the early opening....people showed up by 11:30 a.m. each day, but the mornings were relatively normal. Had PS reservations beforehand, so we were covered there. We certainly didn't do as many rides as usual, but still had a magical time.

great report...making me look forward to my trip in 5 days!!!

As for the heavenly beds...check out the website above, but don't buy it there...find the "ingredients" and go to a place like Filenes, JC Penny...etc when they have the big huge white sale...you will spend a fraction. After using the heavenly beds, I too had to go out and buy everything....but its so worth it!!!! Some days, I don't ever want to get out of bed.:D

Heavenly beds..
I have my own and highly recommend Northern Nights products sold on QVC.com. We have the featherbed, down comforter, and down pillows. They are GREAT. I have also stayed at the Swan, and I agree...the beds are very, very nice.

Thanks for the report...
We were there on Feb. vacation after President's week and found it to be jam packed. We just couldn't get to anything in Magic Kindgom. But DH and I are going to get to do some things we missed on our August trip.

Thank goodness for DVC!

I wonder how it compares to this past Christmas holiday. We are thinking about going next Easter and we were there this past Christmas...I wonder if the crowds are similar???

Because we were able to manage over the Christmas holiday's..

We felt it was busier than this past Christmas....MK and one other park -either AK or MGM- closed to new admissions by midday on at least one day.

Ksp, you are right. I forgot to mention that when we left on Friday the 9th, our driver told us they had closed MK at 11a.m. that morning. I don't think they closed it that early when we were there New Year's Eve.

I know the BWV were completely booked because a family at the pool was moving over to the Contemporary because they decided to stay an extra night and there were no rooms left. That was Wed. I was eavesdropping, so I didn't get the details, but they were heading out.

twinmomplus2new, Geebs & Divamomto3, thanks for all the info about the bedding. I am going to check it out for sure. We have stayed at some very nice hotels, including The Plaza and The Bellagio, but the bedding at the Swan & Dolphin wins hands down.

Divamomto3, we were also there President's Week and this week was much, much worse. Not having kids with us either time, we didn't spend too much time at MK. After the night at the fireworks, I was sorry I had breakfast scheduled there the next morning, but we had the vouchers and I had already called earlier in the week to try to get a PS for breakfast by us at Cape May and they had nothing, so we went and made the best of it.

colleen costello, we DID see massive crowds in the same area you saw them in. It was wall-to-wall people. The only crowds we saw that were worse were the people coming out of and going into Fantasmic. Whew!

zurgswife, when we were there at Christmastime, we also got on rides. The crowds last week were much, much worse. Maybe springbreak hit at the exact same time everywhere.

SamRoc, we were not so lucky as you to walk onto any ride in Epcot. I don't think we went on a single ride there. We just didn't bother. We did the films and the shows. We'll catch the rides next time.

wisbucky, we are not early risers, so beating the crowds in the a.m. just doesn't work for us, but I do know it is the smart way to go. The best we can hope for is to catch a ride before breakfast, but we didn't manage to do that this trip. The buses still made several stops on the a.m. pickup, so we were never all that early for breakfast to begin with.

rocketriter, yes, I, too, would like to see a return to the standards of old. That's what made us fall in love with WDW in the first place. But, I have to say, it's still a pretty special place to be.

MinnieFan4ever, isn't it incredible how DVC changes your whole outlook. I used to be the Commando Queen herself, and I have past itineraries to prove it. What a difference owning DVC has made!

We actually tried to sell the points for this trip, because we bought a new house in MD and I really wanted to go down to it. But, becasue we borrowed the points, we couldn't sell them, so we went. We had the most wonderful trip. I'm so glad we were FORCED to go. Ha ha! Now I can't wait until October.

The parks last week had the largest crowds I've ever seen at WDW, but you know it didn't bother me that much. In fact, I kept thinking that with crowds this large that everything must be getting back to normal - which is great in the long run. We did find that we couldn't do as much as we planned and had to really plan out our fast pass usage, but that's the great thing about DVC - we will be going back. I didn't realize they had closed any parks (in fact we were at MK on Friday), but I guess I'm not surprised. MGM was also very crowded everytime we went, while Epcot and AK seemed not quite as crowded. Also, one more thing, even with the huge crowds I was very, very impressed with all the cast members we ran across. Maybe we were just lucky, but we never ran across a single CM who wasn't extremely friendly and helpfull (except for one waitress at O'hana on Friday night). For folks concerned about park cutbacks, etc.; we sure didn't see it last week.

It seems that no matter what time of year we go, MK is ALWAYS mobbed. We spent about an hour there last November, and left ASAP because we could not handle the crowds. Epcot and MGM are always much better. Any explanation on the crowds at MK? I can't seem to figure it out. Thank God for DVC. As everyone says- "we'll ride that NEXT time".

MK is always crowded, you're right.
MK is always a must on my WDW list....maybe it's because it's full of all the characters from the movies that I grew up with. (sigh...showing my age, aren't I?)
I love Epcot....but it really appeals more to the adult in me, I think. MGM and AK are nice, but I don't picture then first when I think of Disney....ok, now I'm totally off topic and it's time to shut me up.:cool1:

I think you can find similar bedding to make your own heavenly bed, but to me the secret to it's comfort is the mattress by Beautyrest. Without it, it's not completely heavenly. :)

The beds at the Swan and Dolphin have the new Beautyrest mattresses.
