Whoa Alison just whoa :scared1:  sounds like a BIG problem

So have you guys discussed her buying habits and how it's affecting your lives and your finances? It sounds like it's having a really negative effect. My dad doesn't buy much unless it's at a garage sale (and he also goes dumpster diving and trash picking), but he REFUSES to throw anything away, so our basement and attic and garage and his office are a mess.

Oh, and :grouphug:

Yeah, it is a big problem. She only buys things "when they're a really great deal". We go through these periods where she buys way too much, I explain to her that we are running out of money and she goes through eBay and cancels all her bids, but then slowly it keeps creeping back. It's a reaction to the lack of attention/affection that she got from her parents as a kid, the more stuff she can accumulate it will supposedly fill that void, but it never will.

We're just lucky that we're "kind of" indepentdently wealthy. We actually have almost no money, but a lot of equity. But her mother's favorites phrase, "you can't buy a loaf of bread with equity" rings even louder now. I just have to hope that she doesn't take us past our small amount of savings that we have left. If we can get the three vacant apartments that we have rehabbed and rented, we'll be OK, that's what the loan is about. If not we'll actually have to float a balance on our credit cards.

There's not much I can do other than complain about her spending, she won't change and everything is actually her money. I haven't worked in about 8 years, but even when I did work, I didn't bring in any money compared to what her family made. I just have to cross my fingers and hope that things go OK.

She takes care of me for the most part, we just need to hope that she realizes her spending will put us out of business literally!

well I certainly hope so for your sake especially. But like you said she is who she is..gotta take the good with the bad right?

truly shameless post to watch my "odometer" kick over another 100

I have to think that if we were in REAL danger something could be done. I can never figure out what happens to all our money every month and a budget with her would be pointless, besides the way things have been going, we can't budget for anything everything is a surprise to use.

Her father kept the building that none of us lived in as such a secret, we didn't know anything about it when we took it over. We brought him over there once before he died and asked him about the timers on the buildings and what they controlled and he couldn't remember. For years, I just went over there and picked up the checks, now that we're in charge of the building everything needs to be fixed, electrical boxes, replacing all appliances, repainting everything, new carpet, one unit had a serious problem and needed a whole new floor in the bathroom requiring EVERYTHING including walls, to be replaced, new heating and all new plumbing equipment in one unit. Who knows what other surprises we will face!

No matter how many times I see the original Out of Towners I could pee my pants you have seen it right ?

I have not seen it, but Fran is still working on my education of old movies, another thing that she used to buy too much of....we just earned about $1000 selling off unwatched DVDs at bargain basement prices...we still have some to watch, but not the Out of Towners...

Congrats on 4600!
thank you !

Thanks! me too! We started replacing the appliances, carpet and paint last summer, and then by the Fall was when all the surprises started coming up. When we went to WDW in Jan we had it all planned to replace the electrical panels from fuses :scared1: to actual breaker boxes before we left, but I'm not sure if you remember that So Cal was flooding away so it was slightly delayed in that some of the work had to be done while we were gone as oposed to it being done before we left.

Then on our 2nd to last day of vacation we got a call from the tenant that her flex line to her toilet broke and she came home to a flooded house. I called her at midnight FL time and got the details and by 9-10AM CA time the next day I was getting a flood repair team out to the apt, we called our insurance agent and the rest was a nightmare because there was existing damage to the floor that we had to pay for, but she got all new carpet in the apartment and though we paid for most of it she got a brand new bathroom. At least we hadn't replaced the carpet in that unit before she moved in, insurance paid for it.

UGH! We have to pay for a painter to fix a F*$& up of a stupid painter who was an idiot and then I get to spend my weekends at Open House for a vacant apt. This will be my last free weekend because by next weekend, I'll be over at the other apt from 1-4 each day....glad I'm hooked into the DIS. Last year I wasn't into the DIS so I just played solitaire.

..one more day, one more day, one more day, day, DAY!! :cool1::dance3::cool1::dance3::cool1:

Pack DEET bug spray ! I know there has been a LOT of threads on the boards and it turns into joking around and silliness BUT there is a strain of mosquito that are causing chaos down here. Two horses have died and 2 children (not in Orange County) but better safe than sorry. They're starting to send low flying planes to spray in that county for adult mosquitos. google Equine Encephelitis not trying to cause a panic, just bring long sleeves, long pants, bug spray. WDW sprays but like I said. I contacted my county and they're sending an inspector to our property too to see what I can possibly due to cut our risks.
