I believe she was from Japan. They never showed what her score was (or else I just missed it).
Does anyone know?
I'd look it up but I'm ascared I'll find out things about tonight I don't want to know! ;)

She was from China, and I thought she scored an 8 something. I tried to find it, but had no luck.

Yup, China and it was an 8 something. I want to say an 8.2, but it could have been a bit higher.

I gasped when I saw her fall. Yes, I wanted the US to win, but girls (and guys) have gotten seriously hurt when falling off of apperatice (sp?). One of the German men's team was paralysed after a nasty fall right before the games started.

I wanna know what you have to do to get a 2

Right, it was China and she scored either an 8.5 or an 8.6 off of her routine. I was astounded. I am having trouble with the announcers describing adequately what the differences in the performances are. Like, why the heck was hers rated higher than the Russian, Svetlana's (or however you pronounce that anorexic woman's name) routine when she did hers flawlessly and I thought with as much difficulty. I love watching it but I think the former Olympians who are doing the color commentary could provide a little more to the average Joe watching this.

The scoring can be really confusing!

At the olympic level routines have different start values based on the difficulty of the elements. So someone starting out of a 10 value can score higher, even with mistakes, than someone with a perfect routine but a lower start value.

The judges then deduct points for LOTS of different things.

A fall is a 5 tenths deduction - pretty big; but, make a few small, less noticable mistakes like a bent knee, a missed connection, not pointing toes, etc. all worth a tenth or two and that can add up quickly.

Even though a routine looks flawless a girl may have omitted a skill or missed a connection - you might not realize it - but you can bet the judges will catch it!

I saw a coach at a local meet fuming because he thought a gymnasts' score was too low - then he looked at her parents video of the routine and realized she had completely omitted a required skill. BIG deduction.

If I am not mistaken, the Russian girl's biggest fault was her legs/feet coming apart on her dismount. That is supposed to be pretty major, more than slipping/falling on dismount from the way they described it. Also the girl from China fell on her dismount, and that was really her only noticeable fault. She may have also been going for a higher degree of difficulty, which means her score could be higher even with mistakes.

The scoring can be off at times.

Some of the routines looked flawless, but the scores did not justify the performances.

Maybe thats why I'm not a judge. :p

Please send your resume to NBC. You just described what happened much better than they did last night. I do know you start at different levels depending on their degree of difficulty for the routine planned, but it was not really made clear last night to the average viewer that that was the case. I forgot about Svetlana's leg split at the end. She bothers me.
