Last night.....

DH did stop and get out and make sure it was venomous.....it looked like it was headed into the neighbors yard. It was still moving around....thus he didn't realize they had already dealt with it.

My sister asked him (cousin) if he was going to leave it there and see how many other people stopped to kill it.

We also have been having snake and spider issues. Lots of them spiders. DH said the rain we had in the month of July probably. Don't know but I don't like them.

Yesterday morning, walking down my steps...on the bottom was what I thought was a piece of string. I bent down to pick it up...baby black snack. Let me tell you I woke up the neighborhood at 6 am yesterday. DH came and put it out in the yard. Told me it was misplaced since the creek had receeded after all that rain in July...I think there is a common thread there and I am being duped.

I am all for snakes being allowed to live outside...but not inside where I live...spiders either for that matter.

I am an animal lover, but I would kill a poisonous snake.

I live in TN as well, and we have lots of copperheads in our area, but thankfully have not seen any in our subdivision. Lots of non poisonous snakes, though. We don't kill the snakes...the non poisonous snakes keep the poisonous ones away. We just relocate them if they are too close to our yard or the kids. Just take a stick, and pop the little guy into a pillowcase (we have only seen small snakes...only 1-2 ft long). I am a former zookeeper, and that is how the non poisonous snakes were moved...so I know it is safe for them.

But again...poisonous=dead snake, non poisonous= freedom

I don't mind (don't really like and have thrown them out of the house) non-venomous snakes, but not only do venomous snakes pose a threat to kids, they pose a threat to dogs and cats (and other animals that I consider a lot more worthwhile than snakes.) I would kill one as well.

Yes, Kingsnakes especially. One Easter Sunday we were at my mom's and they had recently had a central heat and air unit put in. They don't have a basement like we do, just a block foundation. Well we were sitting there and down the hallway comes about a 3 foot long king snake........scared me so bad :scared1:. Dear brother just scooped it up and took it outside and let it go. When they installed the unit they had left something unsealed or a little door down.......we think the snake came in there.

So now anytime I see a snake I have nightmares that night that they are in the house.

The problem is they could have very easily posed a threat to those kids. Around here, you don't mess around with venomous snakes in your yard. If you have kids, you kill the snake. Period. No one likes to kill an animal, especially me, but if it meant my kids' safety, I would not hesitate.

But if you start killing too many snakes you will then have an abundance of mice and rats. And it is much easier for them to sneak around your house unnoticed than it is a snake.

I don't like spiders either, but as long as they stay outside, eating bugs, then I leave them alone. Once they are in my house all bets are off. But I wouldn't stop in the road to kill one that was minding its own business.

Many venomous snakes killed are not venomous at all. My DH is a wildlife biologist so people are always asking him about snakes. Just this morning there was a dead coral snake in the neighborhood someone had run over. The thing is, that it wasn't actually a coral snake but a non-venomous snake.

Well I don't know about you, but as for me (and probably 100% of everyone I know) I'd rather have a mouse in the house than a snake, venomous or not!!!! :scared1::scared1::scared1:

I live in Arkansas, and it has been a VERY rainy summer here. It has been raining almost everyday for what seems like the last 3 weeks.

Last Thursday night, my DH ran DD and I home after the Jr. High football game. It was an away game. DH dropped DD and I off, unloaded two coolers from our SUV (I was the after game gatorade mom that night), and DH headed back to the school to meet the bus to pick up DS.

I unloaded the unused drinks and started to wheel the cooler across the garage to take it to the backyard to dump the ice when a wiggle caught my eye.

I looked over and there was a copperhead in my garage! :scared1:

In my heart, I wanted to scream and run inside my house, never to go into the garage again. However the idea of that snake being in my garage, near me, and near my children kept me from running in.

So like any good Southern women, I grabbed a shovel and a hoe and whacked that snake.

I held the shovel on him til DH drove up.

Then I screamed and let him take over and I ran inside and cried. :sad1:

I'm telling you a poisonous snake is NOT your friend.

They are VERY dangerous.

I'm not sure why you think it is cool to run over snakes in the road.:confused3 It wasn't on your property, and it wasn't harming you. I think it is kind of sick to mow any kind of animal over on purpose.

Oh please...you've gotta be kidding me!!! :rotfl:

"Snakes are good for three things - belts, purses, and shoes." That's a direct quote from my best friend, and I agree 100%

Live4Christ... it seems you have developed the DawnCt syndrome - anything you say will be bashed... you know, you could say, "the sky is blue" and 42 posters tell you that's not right, that you have somehow slanted it and the sky really isn't blue, you're just a bad person for saying that...:goodvibes

LOL! My dad used to have a hoe that we called the 'snake killing hoe'! Has a whole new connotation these days, as opposed to when I was growing up I guess. I know he killed more than one copperhead with that thing.

I watched a copperhead swim under our dock and told him, then when he came down with the weapon of choice, it had gotten onto the dock. He was my knight in shining armor that day!

It is the right time of year to see snakes around here. They tend to be moving from their summer digs to their winter hideaways. This is a good reminder to watch out even in town.

I do not believe in snake relocation. Whats the point, they will come back. Just kill them and get it over with. To those of you who say leave the poor snake alone, have you ever been bitten by a copperhead? Wel my aunt was bitten by one and she nearly died. It took her a long time to recover from the bite. Those things are dangerous. I cant imagine a child being able to live through something like that.

Oh and ive had the snake in the house thing here and I will take the mice, thank you very much.
