I was just approved for time off Dec. 17th - the 22nd and want to make a trip to Orlando. We are looking to come in early Friday morning and leave mid-day Wednesday. Already found excellent airfare prices and are looking to spend 3 days at Disney Parks and 2 at Universal, since we've never been.

I'm overwhelmed by the hotel options available. I'd prefer and have only ever stayed on property before but am now looking for something a bit more affordable. My first choice was the Holiday Express near Universal as I have reward points built up buy they don't provide a shuttle which would require a rental car.

I know this is very broad but I'm really just looking for suggestions for our stay. 2 adults and a 7 year old.

Thanks!

Visiting both places and staying off-site, I would highly recommend getting a rental car. You can rent a small car for less than the cost the transportation expenses you would pay without one. With a rental car, you can save additional money by staying in more affordable accomodations and driving to less expensive restaurants.

If you don't know how to drive, I would suggest staying in Disney value, which gives you free transportation to the airport. Then you can use the Mears shuttle ($16 per person, RT) for the 2 days you are going to Universal.
