So I know that you must cancel a reservation 31 or more days prior to the beginning of it in order to avoid having points in holding status, but are you able to change up a reservation after 31 days out? Like switching resorts or room types?

Yes you can just might have points go into holding if the new reservation is less points.

To do that you are canceling the reservation and booking a new one. The points will go into holding and you can use those points to book the new reservation. Be careful, you could cancel and not have availability for the new reservation.

It is also built into the wait-list rules. If you set up a wait-list when you already have a reservation, it will last only until 31 days out from date of arrival, unless you specifically request that it continue beyond that date until 7 days out, which you can safely do if the switch you desire costs the same or more points than those already in your reservation.

Keep in mind by switching to another room type or another resort, you are cancelling your current reservation. So if it is after the 31 days mark, your points go into holding. And you will be restricted to booking a reservation at 60 days out since your points will be in holding.

I will just not even consider changing up after 31 days out. I was just curious. Thanks for the info!

Yeah...if you want a different resort other than what you already have booked, you best bet is to set up a Wait List. The catch is, if the request goes through inside of 31 days and the resort is less than your current reservation the difference will go into holding. If it's the same or more points then it's no harm, no foul. In just about all cases, "changes" are actually considered cancellations. In the case of Wait Lists inside of 31 days your Check-In would be within 60 Days, therefore your points are good whether in Holding or not.

Why?

I was changing things up, and letting Disney do so by way of wait lists, to nearly a week out from my recent reservation. I knew that a change would put points into holding, but since the points were being used immediately it didn’t matter. And since I was making my trip more expansive it wasn’t going to cause a problem.

You just have to know what will happen and then do what you want without being scared. :)

 Well I am oh so new to DVC, looking forward to my June booking at SSR and BCVs, so I am playing it safe for now. Still learning more about the process and such.

Getting your feet wet is the best way to learn. You will go from being all excited to learning first hand about the pros and cons of DVC ownership.

I wouldn't do it either, but we don't tend to change vacation plans. We make them for what is available and matches our preference months out (generally at the eleven month window, but we might switch at seven) and aren't the type to change our mind. If our room needs change, they have always been in the subtracting guests, and we just live with the extra space.
