Personally I'd move to Arizona. Vegas is nice to visit but I couldn't live there. We looked there (Henderson and Green Valley) several years ago and didn't care for it. It has really boomed out there though, housing prices are going up really quickly (I work in Real Estate Relocation and deal with companies out there on a regular basis.)

Definitely Phoenix. Las Vegas is such a gamble.

Jeff

Having grew up in Phoenix, I would vote for it

According to Money Magazine, Scottsdale (a suburb of Phoenix) is #3 on the best places to live over 100,000 people.

I understand LV is also a nice place to live as you really don't get caught up in the Strip life. Keep in mind Nevada has no state income tax. Arizona does.

LOL.....dmadman43...the people of Scottsdale would take umbrage at calling Scottsdale a 'suburb' of Phoenix!

bambii.....exactly what allergies do you have, because we have lots of things to sneeze at here too! I have a friend that has big trouble twice a year when the orange trees bloom and there's lots of constant weed pollen too. You might want to do some research before you pack your bags!

But, other than that, I've lived in Phoenix 25 years and absolutely love it! I have a friend in Henderson NV and he loves it there. You may want to think about how big of a city you want. The valley is constantly growing and we are starting to have 'big city' stresses.
(polution, traffic, crime and the like) but also have big city plusses (sports teams/symphony/opera).

BTW, Scottsdale is very beautiful and very $$$.

I just love to go to Bank One Ballpark and hear the Diamondbacks sing La Bohème. We have a great ballet too, we call them the Phoenix Suns.

Until I went there, Phoenix, in '96, I always was under the impression that Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Sun City, Chandler, etc in AZ were all big, independent, geographically dispersed, like maybe New York, Buffalo and Syracuse in NY. After visiting there, I relaized they were all suburbs of Phoenix. I was so surprised.

yea, I know...But hey, when I was growing up there, Scottsdale was that quaint little suburb that had the nice litttle shops off Scottsdale Rd. No Fashion Place Mall. No Botega.

Also, where I lived, 35th Aven and Bethany Home, was the edge of town. Wallace and Ladmo were huge. The Suns were the only game in town. If you lived in Deer Valley, you lived way out in the desert. When you got to Bell Rd coming back from Flagstaff you knew you were getting CLOSE to Phoenix.

Chandler felt like half way to Tucson.

But, I digress.

Sorry Dan, but Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, Glendale, Chandler, Gilbert, etc are all independent cities. The only common demnominator is that they are in Maricopa County. Each city has it's own mayor, tax structure, school districts, etc. To call them suburbs of Phoenix is wrong to say the least. True, they are not geopgraphically dispersed, but they are not suburbs. I could say that I lived in the suburbs of Mesa, I was about 5 miles from "downtown". I doubt you would ever hear anyone say they are in the Phoenix suburbs, that isn't a phrase that is used.

As to the OP, I have severe environmental allergies, every tree, weed, grass and plant that grows on the eastern half of the country bothers me. When I moved to AZ, I didn't have too much of a problem, except for grass, lots of people grow lawns as do all the resorts, golf courses, etc. By the time we moved last year, I was having reactions to other things. It isn't all brown desert, and there is a lot of pollution. Because it is so hot, the particulates hang in the air creating a brown cloud over the valley. You may want to visit first, in the dead heat of summer and in the cooler parts of the year.

That is true, but unless or until they have their own independent media outlets (radio stations, TV stations, and newspapers (I know they have their own local newspapers) I think they would be considered suburbs, and least from a census perspective.

I'll join the minority and say Vegas! I will admit that Vegas is a love it or hate it town though. I know people who've lived there and it seems to be on the extremes, they either love(d) it there, or they totally hated it and couldn't wait to leave.

That being said, I'm partial to it because BF's Dad lives there and we visit at least once a year. We plan to move there eventually.

For me, I like it because it is a big enough city to have most of the comforts/amenities/whatever you want to call it, but it is still relatively small and isolated compared to places like LA. Yet, it is close enough to drive to LA (as you said), and the airport is beginning to be a gateway to many places and you can find lots of flights if you want to travel.

As for living conditions, there are lots of nice, "normal" communities that aren't constant reminders of the Strip, etc. They look like any other community you would find on the outskirts of LA, etc.

Since school is a factor, maybe you should look into the schools that are available, as well as the job markets, and see if one city fits your needs better than another?

Oh yes, I know they are independent cities, towns or whatever, just like here in Chicago, we have Niles, Northbrook, Skokie, Barrington, Mt Prospect (my home) or hundreds of others. But when speaking to someone, especially not from the area (like here on the DIS or to one not living here), we would say we are from Chicago, or the Chicago area. When I was Phoenix, as I said, a few years back, I was just surprised to see all those cities, towns, etc were all just adjacent to Phoenix, suburbs, rather than some distance as I was imagining them to be, like maybe Rockford, Peoria or Springfield here. I guess I never looked at a map before, of the city there.

It was a nice visit, would love to go back.

Well I have to put in my 2 cents.

I lived in Las Vegas when I was 14 and I have lived in Phx for the last 7 years.

I LOVE it here. We moved here from Reno, NV. cold/snow/ice/ick.

I love the warm climate and Phx is beautiful. Vegas desert is ugly IMHO. the deserts around here are beautiful and there are Saguaro cacti everywhere and pretty mountains.

there is culture, sports, shopping, great restaurants, affordable housing, and a temperate climate.
Yes the summers are HOT :earseek: , but that is 3-4 months of the whole year. the rest are PERFECT !!

anyway...I enjoy living here and we were able to buy a nice house and make a decent living. :flower:
