Larrys Wonderful World Trip Report Days 0 and 1.
Wednesday 24th March and Thursday 25th March.
Dear Friend.
Well the trip has begun. What seemed at Christmas just over twelve weeks to the trip and no time at all, has turned into what has felt more like a marathon rather than a sprint. (not that I have a actual marathon in me, well having said that I did have a discussion recently with Gregory who would love to do the London Marathon but I suggested that we should do the WDW Marathon in January, well not this actual January but a future, un-specified January. as you know, I have been on a bit of a health improvement plan recently, but If I am being honest, and you know apart from when I am telling great big lies to entertain you, I like to be honest, I dont think, Ive actually worked my way up to 26 miles quite yet, but you have got to admit, the thought of running through the four parks and even the rest of the world during a marathon is one attractive thought. It probably wont ever happen but we can but dream.)
Well yesterday was the final run down the mythical Mall (London Mall not shopping Mall) , or Main Street USA if you like, to reach the finishing flag of the work marathon and my trip to Disney could start. The last day of work before a holiday is to be endured more than enjoyed. Mainly I had paperwork to do, apart from a short trip to visit a service user, and I had a lot of help from my admin team, who helped me get away by the time I had hoped to. I think they are looking forward to the almost three weeks peace and quite.
Jill had had her last day at work on Tuesday, and so spent the day packing, all our cases, which seemed to be extremely numerous, they are new ones, as Northwest Airlines had wrecked one of the old ones, and had invented a system of claiming compensation so ridiculous that no one including us bothers to claim.
Well after work I went home, and after some elaborate parking of our Mini (who naturally has a Minnie Ariel Topper on her roof) and three motorbikes in the garage, we were ready to set off on our travels.
We drove to Aberdeen, and made a coffee stop at our former next door neighbours house in Kinloss, who are also Disney Fans and have their fourth trip lined up. ( I hope they are saving the Clubcard points from Tescos for the car hire!!)
We spent the night in the Airport Hotel, with an alarm call at 5am. Oh for the joys of travelling .
I cant sleep Im too excited.
And what a tossy and turny night it turned out to be, but we were awake and up at around four forty-five, and at the airport on time bright and breezy. The first flight from Aberdeen to Manchester, just a short hop was on a plane which was, well shall we just say quite small, I should have realised when at check in they asked me what size sheepskin flying jacket and goggles I needed. As it happened it was a great flight, as you know I am not un-aversed to undertaking some flying myself, and this small plane had wings literally no smaller in wingspan as the gliders I fly. There was some real flying in the sky too, and at one point we felt some noticeable G that you would never find in a 747. We landed at Manchester on the new runway, Ok not that exciting for you, but cool for me, a man who spent hours and hours at Manchester with a notebook jotting down Aircraft Numbers in his youth. (well I wasnt that young actually, but since those days, Ive been on Nerd Reduction Technique Classes Sponsored by Bill Gates! And I dont do it now. I did notice that the pilot selected 22 degrees of flap for his decent though, so maybe I am not totally cured. (Its true I did notice them, I looked at the calibration markings on the wing!!)
Well a couple of hours in Manchester Airport proved only that the staff at Burger King, dont appear too motivated, cries of Its a good job we dont have a plane to catch or anything failed to speed up my Egg Muffin and coffee.
A more pleasant surprise was the BMI aircraft, which is a Airbus 330 and very modern with a quite good entertainment system, I watched Master and Commander, which is the first film for years I have seen to the end on an aircraft. And then I followed it up with the whole of Kind Hearts and Coronets a film most noted by most film buffs as Sir Alec Guinnesss finest hour (Apart from those kind of film buffs who hang out at the Star Wars Weekend at MGM Studios who no doubt would argue that playing a Jedi was about as high as you can get cinema wise!) but for me Kind Hearts is noted for the very sexy quality of Joan Greenwoods voice. I have a bit of a voice thing!
And as this is a live report, I can tell you that I am typing this to you over Nova Scotia, travelling at 500 miles per hour, and at around 35,000 feet, (not being accurately to convert from the 11,582 Meters on the GPS screen I am looking at as I type on the old, laptop. Now as you have read many of my old Trip Reports before, you will be impressed haw this new style of reporting provides such accurate information differing from the old times when I used to make it up, three weeks later from the notes scribbled on the back of a Chef Mickeys Napkin. I have travelled 14 miles closer to you in the time it took to type this paragraph . Sorry, too much nerdyness.
Talking of Nerds, the tone of the flight was set by the four, count em, four Elvis impersonators who boarded our flight, I can tell you we were all shook up! I spent most of the flight singing Hucka Hucka Burning Love to myself.
Well the flight to Chicago was long and quite boring, and lets face it,thats how most of us like our flights, boring if not quite so long.
We had a couple of hours at Chicago O Hare, there is a brilliant underpass in Terminal One which is pure Space Mountain Queue territory.
The final flight went almost un-noticed as we chatted to a really nice School Board Conference Delegate, Bill about politics and local government and Disney and it made the time just float by.
Well we picked up the car and booked in to Pop Century, what did I think of the new hotel . You will have to wait until tomorrow to find out in the next exciting episode
Cheers Larry.
