I have a question, if they split us in three, even four tables (we are 14), they consider the number of people on each table or the number of peolple on the reservation, to add the 18% to the bill?

Just a thougt... if they do the second, its better to do the reservation separatelly, because if they provide us a bad service they will charge the 18% anyway.

What is the dieference between 3 tables for 4 and a reservation for 12? Can they move tables or chairs to get us closer?

Does anybody understand me?
Is how can we split the ammount of gratuty? we are going with two more families? Is it after or before tax? Can we calculate before we get there?

Not in any particular order:

The service charge is calculated on the menu price of the items ordered; no tip on the tax, because the server/restaurant didn't earn (and more to the point, doesn't benefit from) it.

You split the actual gratuity paid by letting the server/s know whose meals are on which bill.

For example (ONLY), if you are two families of six and each family is wearing different colored t-shirts, you can tell your server/s, "The yellow shirts are on one check and the purple shirts are on a separate check".

Now, for the determination:
:) If you have one reservation and are seated at one table, each party is assessed the 18% service charge.
:) If you have one reservation and are seated at separate tables but have the same server/s, each party is assessed the 18%.
:) If you have one reservation and are seated at separate tables and have different servers, and each party consists of less than six diners, your check will show suggested tip amounts but it will not be automatic. If any of those parties have six or more people at the table, again, automatic 18%.

If you make separate reservations but when you check in at the restaurant it is somewhat apparent to completely obvious you are one party - by, for example, your request to be seated together/near each other - you will likely be subject to the 18% automatic service charge.

If you have legitimate problems with your service, you can discuss the service charge with a restaurant manager. The BEST time to do this is WHILE you're having the bad experience - not when the check is presented.

Any party of 6 or more has an automatic gratuity of 18% added. The only way around this is to have the group split into two or more groups of less than six each, and each group gets a different server.

If you do the reservations separately, there is a very good chance that you will not be seated anywhere near each other. Once you start asking to be seated near each other, you're likely to be considered one party.

Something else to consider.... We just got back and had a party of 8 separated into three checks. All the servers had trouble separating the checks (even though we were all on DDP) except for WCC and LC. The billing process took forever! And we were all charged 18% each time except for the server at MM who took a gamble and WON - we ended up rounding up from 20% for him (much to my FIL's chagrin!). But they seem to wait until the end to separate the checks and if you have any extras on there that are not included in the DDP, like alcohol or apps, then it seems to be a big headache for the servers. So I highly suggest sitting together with your billing (room) party to make it easier for the servers. Did that make sense?

You make PERFECT sense - it's just too bad that's how it has to be done :(

Lots of times, you don't want to sit with your party (e.g. immediate family); you'd rather be with the friends/relatives you don't see often... and relegate all the kids to one table :teeth:
