I am about to order several used Amish cookbooks on half.com and I know that many of their older recipes call for lard.. Can you still buy something actually called "lard" in the supermarket - or would plain Crisco be the same?

If they still do sell lard, would it be in the refrigerated section of the supermarket?

Thanks! :goodvibes

Crisco and lard are not the same. Yes you can still buy lard, but at select grocery stores. You may have to call around and find which stores carry it or will order it for you. There are still some items you can buy at the grocery store that contain lard. Refrigerated pie crust contains lard.

You could probably substitute Crisco. Whenever I see lard it is in the meat section of the store. You could ask a butcher shop if they sell lard, after all, it's just fat.

Lard is pork fat. Crisco is derived from a vegetable source. Real lard is hard to find - but I usually find processed lard available in the Hispanic section of my supermarket.

Wow! I never thought that lard would be so hard to come by..:confused3

Anyone think that using Crisco instead would make a huge difference in the taste of the finished product?

Lard can be found in almost any grocery store including Walmart. I use it in Snickerdoodle cookies. The package is about the same size as four sticks of butter. Just ask someone in the store where to find it.

Do you use it because it actually makes a difference in the taste? If I'm going to go through all of the trouble of trying to cook/bake like the Amish, I would prefer that it taste as close to the real thing as possible..:goodvibes

If you are going to bake like the Amish, you need to make your own lard

My ex-grandmother in law is Amish. I stock up on lard when I go north to visit family because their stores carry it for the Amish community nearby. Here in Indy, not so much. Where I find it, it's in tubs and not in sticks. Using Crisco or anything like that is just not the same.

Back in the day when I made pie crusts, I used to find lard in the meat department. But it's been years since I've made pie crust so I have no idea if they still sell it.

Lard and crisco taste worlds apart in the food. The crisco wouldn't be completely horrible I think, but lard just tastes better.

You want the lard.

I'm also not sure of where to find it in the store, but here it's also sold in the butter like package.

I think the cookies taste better and have a much better texture using lard. I've tried numerous snickerdoodle recipes and always come back to the one using lard. Everyone always loves them.

Hey - one step at a time here.. I'm still trying (since last year) to get my DD and her DH to buy me an Amish buggy and a driving horse..:rotfl::rotfl:

I'm totally fascinated with their lifestyle - can't even tell you how many Amish books I read last year (both fiction and non-fiction) - and I'm right back to reading them again now that I'm back here at the lake...:thumbsup2

I think that the lard would make a difference int eh texture as well as the taste of baked goods. I find it in teh butter section on my grocery store.

there their site.. If you put in your home store, it will tell you if they have it in stock. I looked up mine and they dont have the large tubs but they have the sticks

Lard's readily available in the oil section of the store (our Jewel carries it). Ours has a green label on it, and you can get it in various sizes.
