Laptop Suggestions

Need to purchase a Laptop since my Dell just hit the dust. Any suggestions?
Just need something very basic. Will only use it for emails, surfing the net and basics. Needs to be budget and one I can purchase on Amazon because I have gift cards

We got a budget Compaq laptop about 2 years ago and it is still doing fine. Paid about 450 for it back then after we upgraded the memory and the HD a little bit. We use it for surfing, email, and MS word.

The Dell Vostro series are pretty good, and well priced. Otherwise, Anything Dell, Toshiba, HP are of comparable quality. When you get into Gateway, Acer, etc. You are taking a step down. Lenovo is pricey, but usually worth it if you've got the $$$

I typed in "Compaq laptop" on Amazon and a couple came up at about 400.

Have you looked at netbooks? I just bought my neice an Acer One netbook from Walmart for $248. Amazon has then in the $250-275 range. They are small (10.1) and basic, but great. I would never buy a Compaq after a bad experience a few years ago.
