Hi! This will be my first time traveling with a laptop. My daughter is homeshcooled and will be doing some lessons here and there if time

I bought the cable/lock, and know to keep it out of sight, etc. It is password protected, though I know that isn't failsafe. It is her laptop though, so no real important info to be gained. I know no place is 100% secure, but was just wondering any other safety tips I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance!

You could lock it in yoru luggage, or use the cable lock to attach it to furniture, either way will be about as secure as you can get it.

I usually leave mine right out in the open and have never had a problem.

Have fun!

we take at least 2-3 laptops- we own and operate websites- with us every year at disney and never had a problem one. we leave them open in the desk area or on the nightstand.

Ill second that for being safe in room
Left ours in plain view at CBR.

And when we checked in and the room wasnt ready I was like treated like royalty when i asked the front desk what i could do with my laptop until we got to the room. They put it away in safe keeping.

I had 100% no worries going into it and was glad i wasnt worried at all cause it would have been a waste of time to worry.

Laptops are taken all the time from hotel rooms. I haven't heard it happening at WDW but it could. Insurance companies want to know that you took reasonable precautions to secure the laptop. If you report that you didn't they can refuse to pay the claim.

So lock it to the furniture or in the safe.

Thanks for the replies! I guess I'll just lock it up to something and play it safe. That way at least I know I took the necessary precautions.

I have a cable lock too and tie it to a table leg (something where it couldn't be slipped off). I feel more comfortable having some type of security. 99 chance out of a 100 it would be OK without a lock but I don't want to become the 1 chance!

Never had a problem, left it on the table at AKL, POR and CSR.

I've taken my laptop every visit and never had a problem. However I don't leave it out. I keep it packed away when not in use.

I haven't been in a Moderate or Deluxe room in a while, but I know for sure that Pop Century will have room safes that will be large enough to hold a laptop.

I wouldn't want to chance losing a laptop. All my work files would be gone and would be very hard to replace. Much easier to use precautions so I don't lose it.

Yes I have backups. :)

I always believe in "better safe than sorry"... so with that in mind, does anyone know how large the in-room safes are at the Swan and Dolphin? My mom is planning on bringing her 10" portable DVD player.

For those of you who wrap the cable around the table leg, how heavy is the table? Would it take much effort just to lift a corner of the table and then slide the cable out from under the leg? I'd prefer to attach the cable to something "fixed". Are ther other pieces of furniture that may be more secure?

Ditto, never had a problem with securing it to a fixture in the room that can't be moved. We do kind of tuck it away though.
just remember that NO place is 100% but I've not heard of any problems at DW.

I don't wrap it around a table leg. That would be too easy to remove. If the table has a brace I loop the cable through that. Also around the bed frame works.

I stayed at a Fairfield Inn over the weekend and looped the cable around the light fixture mounted on the wall.

I am amazed by the trusting nature of so many posters! Perhaps it is my NY up-bringing but it is inconceivable to me to do anything with your laptop short of locking it in a safe...

I don't know about locking it to furniture... I am pretty sure a determined thief could disassemble or cut through a table leg. And locking it in your luggage-- I'd guess a thief would be happy to carry off your suitcase as well as your laptop!

Now I know that an in-room safe is not 100% fool-proof, but it seems like the best bet you would have, unless the hotel is willing to put in it their safe while you are out (but even that seems less desirable to me!). Hmm, maybe I am being overly cautious here, but I paid two weeks' salary for my laptop and I'd prefer to take two weeks vacation rather than work to replace my laptop!

We stayed at the Swan just a few weeks ago. They're in-room safes are now large enough to fit a laptop (and a PDA with it)...we put our laptop in there everytime we left the room.

If you're in a room with a safe that's not large enough, I would make every attempt to have it out of sight. In your luggage, in your drawer under some clothes. Just better to be safe than sorry.
