I found out I can get 512K for my laptop at Frys for $100. Dell wants over $300

How do I tell if my laptop has the "newer" memory? The guy said there is newer memory and older. My laptop is a 2ghz and so I am assuming it's the newer memory...

How can I tell the max highest my laptop can take for memory?

It's a Dell Inspiron 2650.

I have this problem, too. I have an older Dell but I would like to install the max, also. Dell directs you to their web site, but it does not really tell you anything! I want to replace it myself....it seems easy enough. (I don't want to pay someone to do it). BUT, I don't know where to find out the info I need. :(

The easiest way is to check your computer's site at Dell. Just type in the code on the sticker and it will tell you exactly what it shipped with and what it can take. (at least for desktops, but I think it works for laptops too.)

I tried that but it did not tell me what could be upgraded on it. That was awhile ago, tho'. I'll take a look again....

If you go to My Account, enter the service tag as Erik indicated, then go to My Support, then to Dell Technical Support, then Select a Tool, then Upgrades, then Upgrade Your Syastem, then Memory.

I did one of mine and one of my several choices was this. I could order from Dell, or go elsewhere, very easy.

512 MB DDR SDRAM, PC3200 / 400 MHz, Non-Parity, Unbuffered

Ya know... I never registered this one with Dell. We bought it used.... I looked up on some site and I can take 512 of the "new" memory. I was hoping to go to 1ghz but I am glad I can go to 512 at least.

I've ordered memory and batteries for laptop and desktop computers from Kahlon . I am very satisfied with their products and service.

This is a good site Upgrade Nation you can do a search by your computer type. Very cheap as well. I bought most of my upgrade stuff from here.

I got my Dell refurbished/used. I had tried, when I first got it, to check and find out how much the memory could be upgraded and I got stuck in an endless loop at Dell.com. This time, tho', it gave me the info that I need.

I have a Latitude CPx. It can be upgraded to 512MB max. It has 125MB right now ~ which explains alot!! It has Win98 in it. So does my PC. I don't like XP and have not gone "up" to it yet.

I am going to check the two links listed above and check on prices. Dell lists the pricing for 2 x 256MB as $261.00. We'll see what else I can find!

Thanks so much for your help, everybody! I would not have been able to find anything without your help!! ;)

Going to XP, first, and then to 512, mtblujeans, should make life a lot more fun on the PC. Don't try XP first though, before the memory upgrade.
