Laptop in hand luggage

I am going to be taking my laptop with me and will be putting this in my hand luggage, but i think i will also be taking an external hard drive (it has all of my ipod tunes on )

Does this have to go in the hand luggage also or would it be ok going in my suitcase?

I've put mine in my hold baggage on a number of occasions and it's been fine. I always wrap it in clothing etc just to be on the safe side!

I see no reason why it would't be fine in your hold luggage, but I would rather keep that with me. In the unlikely event that your hold luggage goes astray, depending how much you have on that external drive and whether you have everything on there backed up elsewhere, it is just something to keep in mind

i don't know how big your external hard drive is - mine is about the size of an iphone....
i always take it with me in my carry on....too much stuff on it to risk it going with the luggage...
