I purchased my first laptop several weeks ago. Today while using it my touchpad (aka mouse) stopped working!!! This is the exact reason I had delayed in purchasing a laptop. I hate the keyboard and touchpad!:surfweb:

So, if anyone can offer some help!!! I hate to disconnect my mouse from my desktop to plug into the laptop. Customer service closed at 6:00 p.m. So I'm too late to call them.

It's an ASUS, ALTEC Model if that helps. I've read that the FN and F9 key control the touchpad, but I haven't had any luck.

I would just run out and purchase a wireless mouse.. I've had my lap top about 3 or 4 years now, and when I first got it I absolutely HATED that touch pad.. Came here for suggestions on a wireless mouse and rushed out to get it as fast as I could - LOL..

I assume your computer must still be under warranty - so I would definitely want to know what was causing this problem if I were you - but you'll probably end up wanting a wireless mouse anyhow, so why not buy it now?

Good luck! :goodvibes

Many laptops have an on/off switch of button for the touchpad, check for that first.

If you don't see that go into the device manager and see if the touchpad is enabled in the OS (it is in the control panel, switch to classic view, and look under mice).

ok, I'm going to ask. How will she do this if her mouse isn't working? ;)

There is nothing you can't do in Windows without using the Windows key, alt key, arrow keys, or keyboard shortcuts.

For this, hit windows key to bring up start menu, arrow up to control panel and press enter, use arrow key to go to desired option (mouse or input devices), press enter, use tab to move through desired fields (or use tab to give focus to the tab selections).

In any entry level computer class one of the first things an instructor should do is remove the mouse and teach keyboard navigation.

Just learned something new - and very useful - should I ever find myself in the same position.. It worked exactly like you said it would..:goodvibes Putting this thread in my "Favorites" so I don't lose it..:thumbsup2

My touchpad freezes up on a daily basis. But I'm so used to a touchpad, I think I will have a hard time using a mouse again. But it's better than having to turn off (not power down) the computer to try and get it working again. I will go get a wireless mouse tomorrow. Thanks!

We have a wireless mouse, one for the laptop (which I'm using now) and 1 for the netbook. I hate the touchpad thing, I love my wireless mouse. Ours is a microsoft, it's great.

when something goes wrong ... always REBOOT first!!!!!

you'd be amazed at how many problems this fixes, lol. Seriously, do that right now. Occasionally a hard restart (turn off completely, wait a few seconds, turn on and let it boot up completely) will also magically fix problems.

If that doesn't work, you may have a driver problem. you can try uninstalling the touchpad drivers, downloading the most recent ones from your manufacturer's (of your laptop) website, and installing them.

Failing that, something may be loose inside the case and the touchpad probably isn't sensing that you're touching it. In that case, the manufacturer of your laptop will have to fix it.
