Laptop bit the bullet

My Inspiron will be 5 years old next month, and I've had excellent customer service from Dell.
I didn't mean to say that they don't provide great customer service for Inspirons... as I mentioned, my wife had one, and she did get great service. I was just pointing out that they provide better service for XPS. They have separate customer service personnel and policies for the XPS line (i.e., providing a product and service as good or better than Apple Macintosh).

Sorry for the confusion.

This is very interesting. We bought an HP laptop about 2 yrs ago, paid about $700 or $800 and it's junk. There are days where it just won't start up, it will cycle on and off every few seconds. Some days, we can't get it to come on at all. Other days, it's fine. We brought it to a computer repair shop and they said they've seen it before with HP laptops and it's not worth fixing. So, now we're in the market for a new laptop. I really thought that spending $800 on a laptop would have resulted in it lasting for more than 2 years. :confused3

Yeah, HP was one of the first brands to really take the consumers' Wal-Mart mentality to heart, and move away (entirely) from their previously-decent-quality line of computers to what they offer now, which is practically all crap. My wife's HP was replaced within two years (with the aforementioned Inspiron); as you found, it was simply not work fixing (for a third time).

Maybe these days, but actually that's just a starting point for a high-quality, long-lasting computer. Two years ago, not-so-much - laptop prices have come down a bit, since then, so back then money just didn't buy you as much. Just for comparison, I spent $1890.77 for my XPS, back in 2008. Yes, that's a more powerful computer, most likely, than what you bought, but most of that price differential was attributable to the superior components, workmanship, service and support.

Thank you for this info, Bicker. Luckily, since my laptop does work sometimes and we do have a desktop (slow, but functional), we can take our time and do a lot of research before buying a new laptop.

Use to work for best buy did you know that geeksquad some free software to take off virus, malware and spyware.

I do not know what they use but when I had service plan which cost me 1/3 of laptop back then and my computer had some weirdness with internet, they told me it was virus which was somehow not covered by plan, so I paid more for it to be fixed. Then they asked me if I want to pay additional $50 guarantee of their work for the next 30 days(if problem returns in 30 days they will fix it again). Problem returned shortly after 30 days and I was asked to pay again. By that time I already invested about $350-$400 in service plan and fixing my computer. So basically all money I invested were very close to the price of new laptop.

Sadly, I've heard similar stories from close to 10 people now.

Toshiba Satellite 15 inch Lap top 2 yrs old NO PROBLEMS!!!!

I have had really bad luck with Dell computers. In the last 6 years, I have purchased two...one lasted about 2 years and the last one I got did not make it to a year (it died on New Years Day).

Neither was a "cheap" laptop...the last was almost $1K.
