Laptop at security check

I have always made do with my smartphone or tablet, but decided I'd like to bring my 13" laptop next time to make it easier to type my daily cruise journal. At the security check entering the terminal do they make you take it out, or can it go through the scan while in the outside pocket of a small carry-on?

Unlike the airport, you don't have to separate out your laptop.
