Laptop as a Carryon?

I've never traveled with a laptop before & I would definitely take it with me as a carry-on & not in my checked luggage. Is there anything I need to know about taking it thru the airport? Will it need to be turned on or anything? Is it OK for it to go thru the X-ray machine?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I'd really love to take it with me to transfer digital pics to & check email when needed. Thanks!

You certainly can carry it on. I do all the time. You will need to send it through the X-Ray separately. Other than that, nothing special

Some folks have noted here that you will need to take it out of it's case and place it on top of the case in one of the bins to go thru xray. They could ask you to turn it on as well, so make sure it is charged up. Other than that, nothing special.

It is considered a "personal item". You are allowed 1 personal item and 1 carryon bag. Other personal items include a purse, briefcase, small backpack.

Sometimes they take the laptop for a secondary screening where they swap it down to check for explosives.

It's also a good idea to label both your laptop and the case.

All black laptops look the same on the belt-I've got Disney stickers on
my case and my business card taped to my laptop for easy identification.

Thanks for all the great replies!! Sounds easy enough! I figured millions of people do it everyday - was just looking for some insight before we go, and I definitely got it - thanks again! :D

Do not check a laptop or anything else of value.
