Lanyards

On our first trip to DisneyWorld, we loved the convenience of the MagicBands. This trip, we're also doing our first cruise and a couple of days at Universal - both of which use cards. (We're staying onsite, so we'll need our room keys for Express Passes.) My understanding is most people keep their cards on lanyards; are there any specifications we need to be looking for? Do we need the ones with the clear pouches or will any lanyard work?

I can’t say about Universal cards since I didn’t use a lanyard when we went and just kept the card in our pocket. However, the cruise card (called Key to the World) needs a clear pouch since there isn‘t a hole in it and you can’t punch one in, the risk being it will disabled the RFID chip inside.

It doesn't need to be completely clear, though. WE got ones that had fabric/fake leather pockets with a clear screen for the card, and they worked fine.

We dislike lanyard so we just put our cards in our pockets.

The lanyard is definitely a preference not a necessity. We bought the lanyard with the waterproof pouches before our first cruise that fit our KTTW and our iPhones. Turns out it’s kind of miserable to have your phone pulling at your neck all day. I know other people swear by those though, so do what you think will make you happy. Once we stopped carrying the phone in the lanyard we realized we’d rather just not wear the lanyard at all. My husband pretty much always has pockets, I carried a tote bag everywhere, and it turned out to be very dangerous to let the kids wear lanyards (they can get caught on things and pull them by the neck). On our next cruise when we were given the castaway lanyard we barely wore them at all.

Don’t forget DCL has a lanyard! I usually wear a lanyard during my time off because it holds everything I need and it’s light. I like not having to actually carry anything with me. The DCL one has a clear pouch for your KTTW.

If I can piggyback on this thread, I don't think I would personally like to wear a lanyard (I wish DCL did Magicbands - those are awesome and I have so many cute ones!!!) Any alternative suggestions other than just carrying my purse around everywhere?

I bought a wristlet that's just big enough for my phone and has a little room for ID/credit cards/cash to use on vacations. We also had lanyards from Party City that were $1 and cute with characters, DD and I had matching princess ones. Our TA had given us lanyards with their logo that had the clear pouches so I put those on our cute lanyards. I also had a waterproof phone pouch, but I agree it's not great to have hanging around your neck all day. I think I need to plan clothing better for our next trip so I have pockets.

I haven't seen many lanyards hanging around necks on DCL. Lots of people -- especially kids -- with the lanyard looped around a belt loop and the card tucked into a hip pocket, though.

There are also belt clips with retractable cords for id badges. You'd have to purchase your own plastic pocket to hold the card, though.

I love lanyards!

I JUST keep my key to the world card in it though.

I'm notorious for losing key cards, so the lanyard works for me perfectly.
When I come into the room, I hang it on a hook.

I can stick it in the beach bag when we go out, but then the big lanyard part keeps it from getting lost.

We used lanyards on our last cruise (purchased on the ship) and thought they worked pretty well. I have read that some (ladies) use a very small crossbody purse to fit a cell phone (for pictures), chapstick, their KTTW card, etc. I will most likely do that, while hubs will keep in his pocket for our next cruise.

We use lanyards on cruises. I just put my key to the world card in it, so easy to scan going on and off the ship.
But, I also just a cross body bag onboard to carry my glasses and Kindle
