Lanyard Question - Can I carry my phone in it?

My family and are taking our first trip to Universal. We've been to Disney many times and always carry a bag. I know bags are not allowed on most rides at Universal, so we're going to get lanyards to wear. We would like to avoid using lockers as much as possible.

First question, does it matter what size lanyard pouch I have? Can I get one of the larger waterproof ones that will fit my phone? Or do they have to be a smaller size?

Second, I have to put my lanyard in a locker (assuming it has my phone in it) when we go on a ride with a metal detector. And they don't allow anything in pockets. Is that correct?

Third, for non-metal detector rides, is it okay to put things in your pockets and wear a lanyard with a phone in it? I'm just wondering what to do with my sunglasses & car keys.

Any info would be much appreciated!! Thank you.

I have seen people with the larger waterproof lanyards to protect their phones from water. Would be a good idea for rides like Jurassic Park River Adventure, Dudley Doo-Rights Rip Shaw Falls and Popeye and Pluto’s Bilge-Barges as these rides will get you soaked.

They sell lanyards at the parks. These are small zip lanyards. I have my AP on side and my hotel room card
(Unlimited Express Pass) on the other side so both can be easily scanned.

You have to put your phone, keys and any other possible loose objects in the lockers provided for you on the coasters ie..Hulk, Rip Ride Rockit, Mummy, Escape from Gringotts, Men in Black, Doctor Dooms Fearfall (has area for your loose objects), Forbidden Journey etc. Any loose objects on these rides can become airborne and injure you or other passengers.

You do not have to stow your keys phone on ET, Spider-Man, Transformers, Kong etc.

The park maps will show you which rides require you to stow your belongings.

The maps are on the Universal website.

I wouldn't say *most* rides don't allow bags. There's only a handful of locker rides. And honestly, the lockers are not as big of a hassle as it sounds. It adds maybe a total of 5 minutes to the front and end of the ride experience. And they've recently replaced some of the lockers with ones that use your park ticket to open/close, which are much faster. The old style lockers use your fingerprint which could be touchy sometimes and takes an extra minute.

Just make sure your ticket and express pass (if applicable) are visible to the outside for the employee to scan them. The benefit of the lanyard is that since you need your express pass handy so that it can be seen when entering a ride queue and scanned during the ride queue, holding up your lanyard for the employee to see/scan it is much faster and easier than trying to pull it out of the pocket.

Correct. But if you use a lanyard for just your ticket and express pass (the small clear pouches), you can leave that on you. Otherwise, nothing on your person.

I'm guessing no. I don't think they'd allow your phone on.

My best advice is not to over think the lockers. Bring what you need in terms of a bag and just use the lockers. Its not as bad as it sounds.

Also, FWIW, fanny/waist packs with a three prong clasp ARE permitted on non-mental detector locker rides. You could use that in lieu of a lanyard for your phone and not have to put it in a locker. You would still have to use a locker for it on metal detector rides, however.

Uh, when did this happen? It's been a couple of years for me, but I've always been able to have everything in my pockets for non-metal detector rides. The only rides that I know of where you cannot have anything in your pockets is RRR and Hulk, other rides mentioned above are merely suggested to have your items stowed away so they're not lost (which I'd personally suggest on FJ).

The question was whether the OP could bring the phone on in a lanyard. A phone is permitted in your pocket, but in a lanyard around the neck, I don't know. It could vary by TM. I could see a TM thinking a lanyard around the neck that's big enough to hold a phone should be considered a bag and send the OP to the lockers.

Yes, it's ok. My daughter had her phone in a water proof lanyard and was never told to put it in a locker (non-metal detector rides). If you are really worried about it just tuck it in your shirt.

On the few times I had a lanyard I always tuck it in my shirt, g-force may work wonders, but always put it in there just in case, especially rides like the Mummy where you quickly go up and go down the next second since their drops aren't that steep.

We always take a small bag and when it comes to lockers I actually find it easier to have a bag than worrying about what can or not go on the ride. My whole family puts phones, wallets, etc into the one bag and we ride pretty much empty pockets. I retrieve the bag from the locker and everyone grabs their stuff. As others have said the locker only takes a minute or two on each end.

Lockers are relatively easy to use and are definitely secure, @Love_the_Mouse. You have nothing to worry about.

Even when it comes to going through the queue regularly they add on extra time to probably anticipate riders needing time to get to lockers, looking at photos, or going through the gift shop on the rides that have those leading out. Also, the lockers compensate if the queue's wait time increases, or there is a delay on the ride. Besides, if you have any issues you also have ride attendants to assist.

Good thread as I’ve been anxious about this as first timer as well. Truth be told the rides with metal detectors I will likely be sitting out with my youngest as he isn’t tall enough yet. So I’ll pribably hold the older kids’ things. But I may invest in the 3-prong waist pack (if I can find a convertible to crossbody one)

The Kipling Multiple is a good waist pack that converts to a shoulder or cross body bag......it holds a fair amount too, and I takes mine on all rides except Hulk and RRR.......
