My mom and I took DD shopping at Sears last night and got a few things in Lands End for school. I was just online looking for something the store didn't have, and all the regular prices on the website are cheaper. Short sleeve tunic $2 cheaper, fleece pullover $5 cheaper, and this is comparing full price to full price. Plus online if you buy 3 knits you get another $2.50 off each. A dress she got is on sale for $6 less online, plus I'll get another $2.50. It is all going back today and I am going to order online. I understand it costs money to operate a store, but a $5 difference on a fleece pullover top is crazy, plus they have computers at the register where I can place an order for the same item for less. I knew something was fishy last night when I looked at the tunic top and the bottom of the price tag was torn off and a new price sticker was put on the tag!!

Edit- just looked at the fleece and the tag also had the price torn off and had a new price sticker!

That's crazy! Toys R Us routinely has lower prices online and won't match those prices in the store. It makes me mad, because then I refuse to buy in the store, and if I go home to look online, I may buy from amazon or wal-mart, and TRU loses the sale.

My guess is that Sears inflates the prices because they're almost always on sale. You may have paid full price, but they'll probably be 20-40% off for the next several weeks. I'm glad you found a better deal! :thumbsup2

This is common amongst many retailers. For example, prices at WalMart tend to be quite a bit higher in the store than online. I think the reason is that it is much more competitive online since other stores are just a click away. On the other hand, once you've traveled to the store you've made an investment and are much more likely to purchase even if the price is slightly higher than the competition.

I think that it really is less expensive for them to have the online shop versus the bricks and mortar store.

Think about it this way: If the item is for sale in Sears (I use that as an example because they always were the store that carried Lands End. I don't even know if they still do, but it's just an example) Sears has to make sure that every store has a selection of that item in a variety of sizes and colors. They have to have the expenses of shipping those to all the stores and getting them onto the racks. But they don't really know if they are going to sell the purple one in size 12. Maybe they nevver sell a single purple size 12 one at that partiular store, so they merchandise just sits there taking up space. Suddenly they sell out of the red one in size 10, so someone needs to keep track of that, and more red size 10 ones have to be ordered, shipped and put onto the shelves. At the warehouse, they just ship 10 bazillion of them there to ONE (or just a few depending on the distribution chain of Lands End) warehouse. At that point, beause people in half the country are buying from that pile of fleece pullovers, its a lot less likely that the purple one in size 12 is going to sit there unsold. And because they have 2500 in each size/color combo from that shipment from the manufacturer rather than the 4 the store gets in that color combo, it's less likely they will run out of the red size 10 like the store did.

And it's better for you anyway, because you don't have to leave home and drive to the store looking for the red size 10 fleece, only to get there and find out that the purple size 12 is the only one left. It's better for Lands' End and and it's better for you.

Just re-ordered the 3 items and it was $13.50 cheaper, plus there is a code for $10 off 50 and f/s (parentsa11, pin 8355). I have something on hold at Childrens Place I have to pick up, so it is all going back today.

Thing that gets me fired up is this was obviously a last minute price increase- two of the tags had the price torn off and a new sticker was put on.

They pretty much all do that. That is why you need to always check online for prices and compare when in the store. Buy where the products are cheapest - usually it's online, as the individual prices are usually cheaper, plus they offer tons of online incentives.

And remember, most stores do NOT price match between online and store.

Good luck with your returns, Tiger

I've been noticing this ever since my Sears has carried landsend. I usually order 3-4 swimsuits at the begining of the season....and return all but 1 to Sears after I have tried them on at home and not in a bad lit dressing room:goodvibes

I have also ordered multiple sizes of the same thing from Old Navy and returned them to the store in my home town. Just keep watching for the free shipping codes;)

OP here- just had a good conversation with the LE manager at my local Sears. She said they planned the price increase a while ago and it was too late to get the new prices on tickets for a lot of the items. We looked at the kid's catalog- it had the new prices. She has no clue why internet doesn't have the increased prices because it should. So if you are planning on buying back to school clothes- ORDER NOW! :thumbsup2

She was totally willing to price match if the base price is showing up different.
