Laminate Flooring in upstairs bedrooms - UPDATE,samples arrived - color choice now

Ok, I ordered the samples yesterday afternoon and they already arrived today via Fed Express Overnight from the company, which is in Canada.

They look incredible. Very thick bases - I have taken keys to the top, grabbed the dog's paws and scratched his nails across it, dropped them etc etc.

Now I need to decide on the color. I ordered 5 samples and rle out 2 of the colors so far. My two favorite are on the opposite ends of the spectrum the are:

but this one isn't bad either

All of the bedrooms would have the same floor. Kids room's are about 12x10 each, my bedroom is 19x14 with a small hallway with two step down.

Any favorites? The downstairs has Bruce hardwood in gunstock http://www.discountflooring.com/shop/hardwood/bruce/bristol_strip/10012915.htm, which you really wouldn't see from the upstairs, but if I really like this stuff in the bedrooms, I may tear up the beat up hardwoods (that need refinishing) and replace it with more of the same in the whole downstairs. I am torn currently, but I am sure dh will have an opinion when he gets home.

I absolutely 100% like the first one best. I love the color and the look... to me (IMO) the others have the 'laminate' look, the other is more 'real' in appearance.

I love laminate flooring! We put it in our finished basement as a DIY project a few years ago - it was so easy and it still looks like new.

I personally prefer the lighter color wood as it takes much longer for it to show dust. The darker colors show every speck of dust much sooner (dust tends to be white/light in color) and need to be cleaned much more frequently to look clean. I'm not saying that we don't clean regularly but I can let it slide a few more days with the lighter floor. :rolleyes1

Plus, a lighter color makes the room look bigger and brighter and I like that. :goodvibes

Out of the 3, I choose the first one because it is lighter in color but if it were for me I would worry there might be a little to much of a variation in the colors.

I am thinking like another poster when it comes to darker flooring showing up all the dust. One year ago I had an Italian porcelain tile floor put in the entry/family room, it is a medium stone brown color and the dust on it drives me crazy. So becasue of that I would go with the lighter wood for sure!

Thanks for all of the input!!!

We have regular hardwood in the family room and entryway - I have been disappointed with the way it hasn't taken the wear and tear from the family and the dog.

We are waiting for samples of the floor to come before I order online but going with the laminate for the bedrooms definitely seems like a good move.....

Thanks again...

We have regular hardwood floors in the kitchen, dining room, living room, foyer, three bathrooms, and the upstairs and downstairs hallways. Only the den, family room and bedrooms have carpet. One bath has tile. I have had the kitchen refinished twice in 22 years, but with a total of 3 dogs and 4 boys, that's reasonable. Consider moisture cure polyurethane for a refinishing product. We had it done while we were on vacation, so fumes wouldn't be an issue. I think that it has held up very well.

Dawn, I'm glad you posted that. I'm one who just can't get past the look of laminate although they are looking better today than they used to. It still looks fake to me.

If we sell our home, we know we need to do something about the carpeting. Everyone wants wood today, and some people just don't like laminate.

We have 3 stories in our home. Like a split level with another level on top. So lots of stairs and landings. Whatever we pick, I want to use everywhere otherwise it will be very choppy in the flooring dept.

I've heard laminate is a bad choice for stairs because they say its slippery. I have a small foyer that gets rain & snow tracked in. And another small foyer down a couple of stairs that comes in from the garage so it gets dirty.

So its foyer, about 7 stairs, foyer, turn & 7 stairs, living room hall/entrance, turn & 7 stairs, landing, turn & 7 stairs, onto upstairs hallway & into bedrooms.

Our neighbors put wood on their stairs. Its noisey. Vinyl at the foyers and carpet in the hallways, living & bedrooms. Hardwood in the dining room. Vinyl in the kitchen & tile in the baths. :scared1: Way too choppy when the entire place is only 1300 sq ft.

Its nice to know the (real) hardwood could stand up to moisture at the foyer since you have it in your foyer, kitchen & baths.

No kids & no dogs. We take our shoes off at the door & use an area rug to collect the snow, rain & dirt. The carpet still shows dirt from the garage & on the stair edges though no matter how hard you try.

The noise factor of wood everywhere still scares me a lot. And the blahness of wood floors, wood trim & doors & wood furniture. I would seriously need some color!!!! Big area rugs for color & sound. And the white walls would need to go. Our color comes from our carpet now.

I vote for a lighter color rather than darker. Tooooo many stories online of people who vac / swifter & able to see dust & footprints within an hour. Advantage of carpet.....can't see dust. lol I hate having to change the flooring for someone else & then possibly ending up having to stay here & live with it. Don't want to spend my life dusting floors.
