Lake George, NY

Taking a 4-5 night trip to Lake George this summer and have no idea where to stay etc. I've started doing some reasearch online and I am overwhelmed! I thought maybe someone here had some good insider info!

A couple of nights ago, Rachel Ray from the Food Network went there for the $40 a day _________? and it was very interesting and I wanted to go there after I watched the show.

Perhaps that show will be on again.

It depends on what kind of atmosphere you are looking for. Lake George Village (where much of the action is) has a lot of traffic, mini golf courses and souvenir shops, as well as boat tours of the lake and several public beaches.

Some of the other areas around the lake, not directly in Lake George Village, would be more relaxing.

We only spent two nights in Lake George Village, but if I was staying for a week, I'd want to stay somewhere farther out where it would be more peaceful.

You might try Roaring Brook Ranch. It's just south of the village on the road that goes to Lake Luzerne. It's off the beaten path just enough to be quiet and relaxing. They have motel type rooms and a lodge with food and entertainment. We stayed there about 15 years ago for a motorcycle rally (Americade) and, at that time, it was nice. The Americade takes place in Lake George every June during the first week and just about every place gets booked up early.

There are a lot of good places to eat both in town and out and a lot to do in the area.

If you're looking for something upscale, which in that area is all relative, try the Sagamore Inn a little north of the village. It's right on the lake and very nice.

In town, there are probably more hotels per square mile than anyplace else in New York State, but you'd need to get some better advice on which are better.

As I recall, there are a few campgrounds, but I believe they are State facilities with minimal amenities. A little south is Lake George RV park and that is among the best in the country. It's about a 20 minute drive from the village.

I just got back from the Trout House Lodges in Hauge. Went for New Year's. Definetly a bit remote - we went to the wal-mart a few times and drove to Lake Placid once. Couldn't find a movie theater in town - but maybe there were ones in the nearby areas??

The Trouthouse cabins were lovely, though.

A bit pricey, but The Sagamore. We were thinking of having a family reunion there. It looks beautiful.

When our kids were young, we actually preferred staying right in Lake George Village on Canada St. We could walk everywhere without having to use the car. That said, our kids still have a soft spot in their hearts for Surfside on the Lake. The beach area is small, but there IS one, right on the lake. Along with the pool and small playground, it was just right for our needs. We prefer a "poolside" room on the second floor as the balcony also has an oblique view of the the lake... the perfect place to sip my first cup of morning coffee!

What atmosphere are you looking for? What's your budget?

Favorite expensive/not kids friendly place : Friends Lake Inn, Chestertown, NY (approx $335 per night, breakfast and dinner included for two)

There are a lot of motel type accomodations in an d around the village. I would actually prefer to stay in Saratoga Springs and drive up to Lake George Village in the evening.

There's a family, no frills resort on a little lake just south of Lake George (is actually still considered Lake George) The Glenmoore on Glen Lake.

There are a lot of good places to eat, but again, I prefer the choices in Saratoga Springs. As long as you're not going during track season, I would try to spend some time there.

We've stayed at the Holiday Inn Turf on Canada St a few times. It's a nice hotel with an indoor and outdoor pool. We don't like "rustic" so we just always choose a hotel rather than a resort but I knwo there are some decent resorts right on the lake right in town. Check out Tripadvisor.com.

I'd like to spend under $400 per night including all of the hidden fees. We usually like to be near the action, but also have no problem driving to get to it. We will be going when the racetrack is open - week of August 12th. I know the kids will want to waterski, go on a boat, horseback ride, and go to Great Escape. I thought about staying at the the new hotel near Great Escape, but is that too far away from the village? It's hard to find a map of the area.

how old are your kids? We just moved from Saratoga and one of my kids favorite activities was going to the track for breakfast. We used to just bring something in, although you can eat there. Its a lot of fun...and free! (well, it can be free...there is a parking fee that you get back as long as you leave by a certain time)

Its fun to watch the horses warm up. We never took our kids to the track while races were going on, so this was their way to see the horses. The jockeys are often very friendly and chat with the little ones if they are going slow.

Good luck on your hotel search! I wish I had a recommendation for you.

I went to Lake George last summer for 3 days. The town is adorable. We happened to visit during Family Fun Weekend. Fireworks, crafts, flea market. Lovely! We took a ride on the Stemship Minniehaha. One thing we wanted to do but couldnt was have a dinner cruise. They were all sold out.

We stayed at the Montreal Motel. I would not suggest you stay there. The rooms are old. I would go with a Holiday Inn. We went to breakfast at one and we loved it!

Ohh! Get great ice cream from the Pink Roof. We also drove about 20 minutes to Fort Ticonderoga-very interesting and entertaining. Period cosutmes and the like.

The new hotel is directly across the street from Great Escape, which is about 4 miles south of the village of Lake George. There are trolleys for transport around the village in the summer, I'm willing to bet they'll be stopping at the big new resort.

Do your grocery stores or drugstores carry maps by Jimapco? They're based in this area (I'm a lifelong Saratoga/Lake George area resident) and if you could find one of Warren County you'd get a good idea of the lay of the land.

As previously posted, Lake George Village is "busy," especially in mid-August, Lake Luzerne and Bolton (where the Sagamore is) are not so busy, but have the activities you mentioned.

The Lake George chamber and Warren County have tourism websites that would also be helpful.

Just wanted to add that the Holiday Inn is very nice. It is in the village, though not on the lake. You can easily walk around town from there but it does not have a private swimming beach on the lake. It does have nice indoor and outdoor pools.

Most of the motels in town are small family run places that have been around for years. Nothing fancy at all. For my taste the Holiday Inn is the way to go.


You can also rent cabins which can be a bit more "rustic" or even rent homes through real estate agencies.


I have also stayed at the Sagamore which is $$$$$$ but very nice. To me not nice enough for the money they charge though. It does have a beautiful spot right on the lake. You can not walk into the village though.

Don't bother buying that map I have an extra one I will send you with the other stuff
