We have booked this resort for July and wanted to ask if we needed to rent a car or if there are places to eat nearby?

That's a location where you will want a car. Here's an aerial photo courtesy of Bing Maps:

Your resort is near that blue dot. (That's the address listed on the resort website: 8113 Resort Village Dr.) The buildings to the south are the Lake Buena Vista Factory Stores. According to their website, there are a few mall food court type dining locations.

If I remember correctly, there might be a few fast food places just south of where the above image ends. There's also a Walmart. But, it's probably about a mile walk along State Road 535. I also would bet there aren't any sidewalks, either. (We're not big on sidewalks here in Florida.)

It depends on what you want to eat. There is a Pizza Hut Express in the little grocery and there is Frankie Farrell's and then the pool bar had a decent menu some days. I just walked to all of these when staying there.

So, if you are basically only hanging out at the resort and not going places every day, then you could find some places to eat without going far. If you plan to travel to other places each day, you might want to consider a rental car.
