This is my house

As you can see, I've had some landscaping done before, but it has gotten really overgrown and after this harsh winter we had, alot of the plants have died. I really want to scrap most of the beds and start over. I, however, don't know the first thing about landscaping and don't have anything close to a green thumb. There are a few plants that I plan to keep, like the camellia bush in front of the windows on the left and the Jane Magnolia next to the porch on the right, but other than that I have no idea what to plant and where.

Any idea?

I don't know if you can see the pic or not since I can't see any pics at work anyway. If you can't, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

Aww! Shoot!!!

I can't get into any photo storage sites at work.

I don't really know anything about landscaping either.. But! I think that some really bright flowers (reds, yellows, oranges, etc) would look great with the tan/brown color of your house to brighten it up.

I agree. I'd do white and red flowers... maybe some grasses.

Yep may some grasses. You need some things with height. Maybe a weeping cherry off to the left. And a bench or swing. And some color which you can add in pots with flowers.

you have a very nice house.

I'd do something tallish in fronot of the two white pillars on either side of the sidewalk...maybe some of those tall ornamental grasses or a couple of bushes that will grow tall and sort of slender.

The other white pillar off to the right and sort of at the corner of the house...I'd extend the bed further out into your yard and plant a slow growing small tree of some kind there...maybe a weeping cherry or an ornamental plum...a red maple...something that will give you some color over there.

The rest of th ebeds I would fill with bright flowers or bushes with leaves that are variegated or brightly colored. Burning bush comes to mind, as its leaves are yellows, reds and greens.

Just remember to leave room for the stuff to grow.

Thanks for the ideas.

Apparently, I've been going about this the wrong way. I was under the impression that I needed to have low-lying flower beds since I don't have a railing on my front porch. Now I can see how the height would work to replace the railing. I do have a white swing on the front porch and two big flower pots that I need to fill with something.

Thanks for the compliment.

I would spend the money on having a professional plan drawn up. It will cost you less in the long run. You can still do all the work to save money and do it in stages if needed but at least it gives you a guide.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm definitely going to look into adding the height to the front two pillars. I do have a Jane Magnolia off to the right of the porch (if you're facing the house). It's hard to see in the picture because it was still a little scraggly thing, but it's growing nicely now and makes the most beautiful purple flowers around this time of the year. I had thought of widening that part of the bed though.

Thanks everyone. I'm really excited about getting this started. I LOVE beautiful landscaping, but its alot of work!
