Ladies with curly hair!

I use the Deva Curl line I LOVE there products. You should check out their website they have some really awesome videos, just google Deva Curl an it'll come up :)

Diva Curl - An-gel and Believe In for product. Also Loreal Curling Mouse if I need something stronger

Shampoo/conditioner - Organix Coconut

totally agree. Good stuff.

My girls and I went curlygirl method in November. Definitely recommend the forums (CurlTalk) at naturallycurly.com. Trying all sorts of things out. Basically we are avoiding sulfates in shampoo, and avoiding silicones. Note that if you have been using silicones, you need to do another sulfate wash to get them off. We are using tea towels to scrunch dry instead of regular towels. Putting in a little conditioner as a leave-in. Sometimes I co-wash- use conditioner as a cleanser instead of shampoo. Just have to make sure you massage the scalp well to loosen dirt. That really makes your hair soft and moisturized!

It can be a lot of trial and error finding out what your hair responds well to- we all have different hair qualities. I am trying to figure out 3 heads of hair here! DD11 is quite curly and prone to frizz ("3B"). DD14 has a more loose pattern with bigger loops and ringlets (3A). Mine struggles to do more than wave in odd directions so I am working on encouraging curl.

Suave Naturals and Tresemme Naturals conditioners are silicone free. Loreal makes a line of sulfate free shampoos. All of these are inexpensive. I do pretty good with those, along with some Herbal Essences Set Me Up mousse, and Garnier Fructis curl gel spray with shea.

Now I can't say we've had dramatic results like some others- our hair was healthy to begin with as we weren't using heat or chemicals, but it can't hurt to use these more natural products and a few curl enhancing techniques. I don't think I've ever had my hair this curly at this longer length, so I'm pretty happy.

Oh I also have to add that DD14 had oily scalp and we had her on a Garnier heavy duty shampoo for oil. But I believe that was stripping and making her scalp produce more oil! Since putting her on the gentle sulfate-free shampoo, she is actually not oily anymore.

Anyway, good luck. Always good to work with what you've got instead of fighting it. I think DD11 probably got her hair straightened at a friends house tonight but it will be a novelty and not a regular thing. Her hair is SO pretty when her curls are nice.

You might want to check out the "curly girl" method -- I've been doing it since March 2010, and my hair has never looked better.

http://www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-Curly-Girl-Method-for-Curly-Hair

That last pic of the redhead looks just like my nieces hair and this is the method she uses. I'd also add I have short curly hair and us all Moroccan Oil Brand products. I use nothing BUT Moroccan Oil, no mousse, or gel so no crunchiness. Every time I get my hair cut my stylist remarks on how good it feels.

Thank you for all the info! My DH has long hair and it is super curly and frizzy as can be. DD inherited his curly hair. She is only 3 and has hair past her bum. I use a baby shampoo on her and then a good conditioner. I tried a different conditioner and you could just feel the difference in her hair.

This does explain a lot to me. I have a friend that says that she never washes her hair. I was shocked because it definitely doesn't look dirty. This must be what she does. She has super curly hair but it is gorgeous.

I didn't go through the thread so I don't know if it has been mentioned but I LOVE John Frieda Dream Curls. I have wavy hair and I hate when products make my hair hard, this doesn't.

I tried Dream Curls and my hair was nothing but crunch. I wonder if products react differently on different hair?

I've got a wave/curl combo going on, and the sulfate free or conditioner-only wash does bring out the curl. I tried the L'Oreal and didn't like the smell, so I'm back to the Suave naturals.

I don't have curly hair but a friends daughter does & they swear by the 'Mixed Chicks' line. You can buy samples apparently before you commit. My friend said she actually saw a change in her daughters personality because she wasn't hating her hair anymore.

On the Deva and Ouidad, and any other costly curl method, I recommend buying at Ulta as they have a good return policy if you try it and hate it. Nothing worse than spending $$$$ and a product not working your curls.

From their website:
ULTA is dedicated to bringing you an unparalleled shopping experience from start to finish. If you are not completely satisfied with a product for any reason, just send it to the Ulta.com Returns Center for a refund. You may also return it to your local Ulta store for a refund, exchange or in-store credit.

You all have convinced me. I started the curlygirl method last night. ::yes:: I got out of the bathroom and my husband, whom I've been with for nearly 20 years says, "Ummm did you give yourself a perm?" :lmao: All these years, and he had never seen it curly. His face was pretty priceless!

My hair looks crappy today. I hope it gets better with time. :faint:

The first five days were an unflattering, oily, frizzy transition for me... Then, boom! Curls! I started seven months ago and haven't looked back.

My favorite products are the Curls line, available at Target or Sally Beauty... I also like the Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus line, and I think Tressemee Naturals sulfate-free makes a great cleanser and conditioner.

Just don't be afraid to adapt the little steps in the method to suit your needs. I plop with a triangle cut from a large tee shirt, and I also never turn my head upside-down to scrunch (I tilt my head to each side and dry/apply product to half my hair at a time). Even when I wash my hair, I split my hair down the back and pull over my shoulders like pigtails (it goes midway down my back). That keeps my curls from going funny as they dry, clumping oddly, et cetera.

Here's what I do--
Rinse with water
Cleanse (by-the-book)
Condition, letting sit for at least five minutes and parting my hair all down the back to condition each side separately
Trickle-rinse
Graze canopy with a bit of hair gel
Scrunch dry with tee shirt (not flipping head, just tipping head sideways, dry that side, then tilt and dry other side)
Plop carefully, making sure not to disturb curl formation
Unplop and apply product
Diffuse or air-dry (if I used a hooded dryer I'd skip plopping)

This is what works best for my tempermental boticelli curls. :)

Thanks for the encouragement. :) I did get some Tressemee today, but it wasn't the naturals line. I think it said curl hydrator. The bottle said it was lightweight, and I checked the ingredients - no sulfate.

Are you talking about a Tresemme shampoo, or conditioner? The conditioners generally won't have sulfates, but it is the silicones you need to watch out for in the conditioners. If you are not using a shampoo, the silicones will build up.

I couldn't tell from your posts if you are co-washing, so just want to make sure.

Anytime you are wondering, at naturallycurly.com under Products, you can click on product reviews. There are over 7000 products with their ingredient attributes noted (a silicone-free icon, sulfate-free icon, glycerin-free, etc.) The only Tresemme curl hydration item I found though was a creme and it is not silicone free.

I think I want to get the new Loreal Evercurl shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in cream. It is brand new.

Here's what I do: after I wash my hair, I comb it with a wide tooth comb and put a hair oil on it. Mine is called Amika Obliphica, but any decent hair old should work. Then I put on bumble and bumble curl Creme for fine hair (my hair is not fine, but the fine Creme works great and the one for coarser hair is too much) and scrunch a little. Not too much. Let air dry or dry with a diffuser. Once dry, I put some more oil on my hands and run it over the curls like I was pulling my hair into a loose ponytail. That takes out any residual crunchiness from the curl Creme.

I also don't wash every day! My curls usually look better on day two or even three. My curls aren't super tight, but they are very stubborn.

I bought Tresemme Curl Hydration conditioner (it says new). I did go over on the forums, it contains silicone, but one it says can be removed by co-washing.

I guess I'll try it and see. :confused3

I haven't read any of the replies.
Curly hair and my routine is SO easy.
Take shower. Comb hair when I get out. Towel dry a little bit. Put Aussie mousse+leave in conditioner (it's one product) in. That's it. I'm really happy with it.

Is there a youtube video that helps you with this? Because I'm totally confused!!

Gah! Thanks for pointing out... I use the SILICONE free line, not the sulfate free line. My hair does so, so poorly with silicones. The first day will look great, but by day two I have snarls and tangles out the wazoo. Since I ditched sulfates and silicones my hair has been smoother and tangle-free!

I second/third/whathaveyou naturallycurly.com!

Products I swear by: Sebastian Potion 9 and Fekkai Shea Butter conditioner. I have an oily scalp so I do shampoo a couple times a week, but mostly I just rinse.
